$7 ice cream cost me a $2,000 hospital bill. I ordered a scoop of the sea salt caramel with chocolate morsels in a cup while I was visiting this summer. As you can see from the sign, this flavor is marked as not containing nuts. I told the person who took my order that I was allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, and still asked if I would be okay to eat there. They said yes and wrote down my allergies on the order slip. When I took my first bite, I bit into what I thought was one of the chocolate morsels, but it was literally a mini peanut butter cup. I had everyone in my party taste it to confirm, as I thought there was no way that they had given me peanut butter cup ice cream after I’d just told them I was allergic. But I quickly became very ill, spent 8 hours at the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, and needed 3 epi-pens. One of the most disappointing parts of the experience was trying to communicate with the owners, Deb and Kim Glowacki. I went back to the store two days later to tell the staff what happened, and to hopefully prevent the same mistake from being made with someone else. I asked for Deb and Kim’s contact info, and the staff member I spoke with told me that there was no way that they would have given me the wrong flavor. She told me and my fiancé that I must have mistaken the morsels for a peanut butter cup and even pulled out a scoop of the salted caramel flavor, saying: “See, they look like peanut butter cups but they’re not.” After we offered to show her the receipt from my $300 hospital co-pay, I finally got Deb and Kim’s card. We reached out to them via phone and email multiple times explaining what happened, but never heard back. I’ve never had this kind of experience with any restaurant, and it was super...
Read moreDon’t go to this place if someone in your party has a nut allergy or any other allergy. I’m not sure how much I would trust this place after yesterday.
Where do I begin… my girlfriend and I came for ice cream on 7/25 after a great day spent in Nantucket. My girlfriend informs the person at the cashier she has a nut/tree-nut allergy. The lady at the the cashier nods and doesn't notify any of her colleagues. First red flag…
Additionally, my girlfriend asks the worker serving our ice cream to use a clean scoop because of the nut allergy. The lady serving us nods as well and proceeds to get a clean scoop. So we thought we were good. We’re served our ice cream and once we step out of the shop my girlfriend notices she was served ice cream with a walnut, Maple Walnut when she clearly originally ordered a nut free ice cream. At that point she had already taken a bite of the ice cream.
Of course we went into panic mode. We had to call the EMT to get my girlfriend checked out. Everything was good at the end. But truly places like this need to be a lot more careful. Something worse could have happened. I advise anyone with a family member that has a severe allergy to not trust this place AT ALL. Especially since I’ve read a similar review now regarding an allergic reaction at this place.
Writing a review like this one hurts because I truly love local shops & owners who work so hard to open one. But this can’t happen again. Its a silly and...
Read moreJack + Charlie's is a small, family-owned ice cream shop on Straight Wharf in Nantucket. It was founded by two young boys, Jack and Charlie, who are passionate about making delicious ice cream. The shop uses fresh, local ingredients and makes all of its ice cream in small batches.
The ice cream menu is extensive, with over 30 flavors to choose from. There are classic flavors like chocolate and vanilla, as well as more unique flavors like blueberry lavender and salted caramel gelato. Jack + Charlie's also offers a variety of toppings, so you can create your own custom sundae.
The ice cream is made with love and care, and it shows. The flavors are rich and creamy, and the textures are smooth and velvety. I especially loved the blueberry lavender ice cream, which was perfectly balanced between sweet and tart.
In addition to ice cream, Jack + Charlie's also serves breakfast sandwiches, coffee, and tea. The breakfast sandwiches are made with fresh-baked bread and locally-sourced ingredients. The coffee is roasted on Nantucket, and the tea is sourced from around the world.
Jack + Charlie's is a great place to enjoy a delicious ice cream treat or a leisurely breakfast. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting. I highly recommend Jack + Charlie's to anyone...
