This was not the way I wanted to end my last night in NOLA. My family and I love Vietnamese cuisine, especially pho.
There was a wait and we could see they were severely understaffed, but decided to wait because we had been anticipating it for our last night. There was a section that they'd closed off, possibly due to staffing issues. I bring this up because there was no offer to open it up for my family.
Once a table became available we were seated and a Vietnamese family that came in afterwards were seated in the closed area. Then another Vietnamese couple were seated as well.
While I did notice this, I figured they just didn't want to turn away business, but then more people came in, not Asian, and they were not seated in that area, they had to wait for a table to open.
Our table put in our order first but received our food last, behind the 2 Vietnamese tables that were seated and waited on after us. Kicker is, we ordered the same items, pho, except for fried rice. We also ordered shrimp spring rolls and didn't get those until after we received our pho.
This is actually painful to write because, while I don't think it was with malicious intent, it affected the rest of my night, mostly because I could see the difference in treatment, but also because my wife and daughters felt this as well. I don't like to bring race matters into my experiences, but I feel like it was pushed into mine and it was difficult to ignore.
The food was really good once we received it, but it was hard to focus on it after the treatment we received. For that, I cannot in good conscience...
Read moreLocated downtown near the French Quarter; surrounded by a number of hotels I thought this restaurant would be busier than the pictures show. For a Friday evening, such a large restaurant only had one other customer.
I had the combination vermicelli noodles with chicken, shrimp, and beef with an egg roll. To drink I had the limeade which was very good. Not too sugary. The vermicelli was good, not great.
But two things about this place. Service was spotty. For an empty restaurant the food was slow. I was served the vermicelli plate but was told the (one) eggroll would take another two minutes. It was about four or five minutes.
Also when the dinner was over the server mentioned that their card reader was not working and that I would have to pay cash. I mentioned that that would have been nice to hear up front, since I gave the last of my cash to all the great musicans playing on the street. She wanted me to leave my credit card while I went to hunt down an ATM. I said no thank you.
I'm staying right across the street but doubt I'll be back. I do love the breakfast and lunch restaurtant down the...
Read moreThe casual, clean atmosphere is a great respite from walking around downtown in the summer. I'm very impressed with the quality of food and the level of service that you get here. I feel like it's hard to find a restaurant that does cultural variety very well - this place does! The menu features several different types of Asian cuisines, including fried rice, pho, sushi, and gyōza. If you like Asian cuisine, there is a great chance that you will find something to enjoy at this awesome restaurant. The wait staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They are easy to talk to if you are unfamiliar with the menu. They recently added Thai tea to the menu, it's a blend of tea and spices served over ice with half and half. It's very refreshing after walking around in New Orleans. My party of 4 ordered very different dishes and were all very happy with the quality of food and the portions. If you need a place to eat while near Poydras, please consider this place. It's officially on my list of places to eat at...
