The short version - GO and you will not regret it for one second!
The long version - we've wanted to do a swamp tour for a very long time and when we came for a long weekend to NOLA, we thought this might be the best time to do so.
I cannot recommend enough that you do a small airboat ride. Is it more expensive than a covered pontoon ride? Yes. Will you regret spending the extra money? No. Way.
Captain Danny took my husband, me and another family of 4 out on the bayous. There was a little storm brewing so they decided to wait it out and then get our ride underway. Right off the bat, Danny stopped to point out a native bird nesting and gave us plenty of time to get our pics of the nesting mama. We barely get underway again, and another airboat stops to feed an alligator so we get to stop and watch as well. Finally, we get out of the no wake zone and because we were a bit rushed on time due to the storm we waited out, Danny gave us an option to take a leisure ride through some marshes or go for a thrill ride, but we didn't have time for both. The mom from the family along on our boat immediately said, "I want to go fast! Let's see what this airboat can do!"
Since the area had had storms the night before, the water was up - which the alligators liked best and it also allowed us to travel over the plants growing in the marsh. True to his word, Danny took us on a fast ride full of turns and water spraying - it was everything we'd hoped it would be. We are having the best time - and then the boat immediately stops and Danny goes rushing to the front of the boat. I'm thinking we've hit something, we're stuck...no - this man stopped on a dime not once, but three different times to stick-his-arms-in-the-water and catch alligators. He told us about them, their habitat, different ones he knew from growing up on the same bayous, let anyone carefully hold them - literally just living his best life and allowing us all to come along for the ride.
Take a lightweight jacket if you're going in the spring, bring sunglasses, bring a snack, bring your cameras and pay for the small airboat tour for the best experience. I'd also suggest paying for transportation to/from the tour. We decided to Uber - getting an Uber there was no trouble, but we did have to wait about an extra 45 mins after the tour to find an available driver to take us back to the quarters.
If you want to see a short video of Captain Danny catching an alligator - I've posted one on my TikTok...
Read moreI never leave reviews so this will be a first for me. To start off, I want to say that myself and the other person in my party arrived about 20 minutes before we were supposed to leave (around 3:40, our boat leaves at 4). We checked in and waited around until 4 rolled around, and waited… and waited some more. At around 4:20 we started to get a little antsy wondering why we haven’t been called to board yet. About 10 mins later we’re finally called to board, along with the other 50 or so guests. I found it strange that out of about 7 boats nearly everyone was boarding at the same time, and 30 minutes past the time we booked for. We figured since we were leaving 30 minutes late, our trip would be extended 30 minutes to accommodate. The tour was fantastic!! We saw dozens of gators and even got to feed them. Our guide was very knowledgeable and shared a lot of cool stories/facts. Unfortunately around 5:30 we started to head back to the dock and the trip wrapped up at 5:45. Knowing that the trip would be 1 hour and 45 minutes we had pre booked an Uber to be ready for us when the tour was over, but since it ended 30 minutes early we were left waiting for 30 minutes while all the employees closed up and left. All in all the trip was great but for leaving 30 minutes late, our trip that was supposed to be 1 hour and 45 minutes long, was whittled down to only an hour...
Read moreMisty and her team had arranged for us to do an Air Boat tour (Apr 29) and Zip lining (Apr 30). Did not matter who you spoke with they were very knowledgeable in getting our tours booked before we arrive in NOLA. We woke up Apr 29th and the weather was not great. The Air Boat tours were cancelled for the day. We spoke to Misty about our option for Apr 30th. We decided that can do Zip lining in other places, but not Air Boat tours. They easily cancelled our Zip line with full refund and booked us on another Air Boat for Apr 30th. We had to be booked on a 9 passenger as opposed to the original 6 passenger tour which was not an issue. My credit card was refunded 100% for Zip Line and $10 each for the difference between a 6 and 9 passenger air boat tour. The entire experience was first class and all about making sure our experience in NOLA was successful. The advantage of using a reputable broker like Swamp Tour is that they have a number of different locations and are able to switch things on the fly as the weather changed. When the original tour was cancelled we initially got a call from the dock and they could not arrange anything for us on the following day. Keep up the...
