I visited the new Angelina Bakery location yesterday afternoon, genuinely excited to try it out. Though I wasn’t feeling my best physically that day, I masked up and still made the effort to stop by and support a new spot.
When I arrived at the pastry counter, two staff members were engaged with other customers. I waited patiently and made eye contact, clearly standing near the counter to be assisted next. However, moments later, a white-passing brown man, followed by an Asian woman and her daughter, stepped right in front of me, just inches from where I was standing, and were greeted and served immediately.
For context, I’m tall, big, and hard to miss. It was baffling and disappointing that I was overlooked so blatantly. I didn’t make a scene, and maybe I should have spoken up, but I was hoping for the basic courtesy of acknowledgment and fair service. Instead, I was made to feel invisible.
When I finally inquired about the Dubai croissants after they took the mans order, I was told they didn’t have them but was offered other options. While the pastries were undeniably good, the lack of consideration and the implicit message sent by how I was treated made the experience bitter overall.
I will not be returning to this location. It’s painful to realize, but sometimes skinfolk ain’t kinfolk — and it’s clear not all customers are treated with equal...
Read moreI visited Angelina Bakery (Lenox Hill) today and was very disappointed with the way my bill was handled. I ordered just a few items, and without my consent, a 20% tip ($6.42) was added to my total. I did not authorize this tip, and there was no clear notice that it would be charged automatically.
Tips should always be optional and left to the customer’s choice, especially for a small order. Adding it without consent feels dishonest and unfair.
The food itself was fine, but this kind of practice leaves a very negative impression. Customers deserve transparency about charges...
Read moreHave been wanting to try this place, finally got some small pastries but turned out stale. Croissant and donuts were not fresh, and the mini tarts had too much filling (and overly sweet) for the crust ratio. The only saving grace was the chocolate fillings in the pain au chocolate and frosting on the donut, they were really great. Bummed the pastries were bad. Service was five stars though. I'd also recommend the Angelina across the street over...
