My sister and I needed a quick snack before a show in Bushwick, and were delighted to find this place with so many vegan options.
We each ordered savory and sweet items, plus coffee and a drink. We were in rush so the moment the food arrived, I immediately went for the cake - and she yelled stop!! I spat it out quickly. Luckily, she noticed there was some kind of a spider/bug on it. It was small and moved about the cake quickly. After a moment of deliberating, I decided to bring it back to show them.
There was a line of people, so not disturb their customers, I went to the back area and quietly told one of the workers that there was a bug thing in my cake. Without any emotion, she said "trash is right there". I said, please take a look and shoved it closer to my face. She said nothing. I tossed it and came back to my sister to relay what happened. We sat there both shocked that she didn't care.
Meanwhile, we only had a few minutes before the show, so I tried my vegan tuna sandwich which was two supermarket breads and crushed chickpeas in the middle. Of all the vegan sandwiches I've ever had - this was honestly THE WORST. It's as though it was made by a carnivore who had no idea what vegan food is. I tossed most of it.
Finally the guy behind the counter came by and asked what happened and we explained. He said, "next time, come and show me the bug." But we didn't want to disturb the customers waiting in line I explained - they would have all left hearing the story. He asked what we want to do and offered a substitute, which was fine.
Finally we had to go and realized the coffee wasn't brought out - and he told us he didn't take the order for it and to pay if we wanted it made. I said, I heard her order the coffee and now we had to leave and had no time, he didn't care nor apologize for not hearing the order.
The whole experience was totally baffling. Most places would at the very least be apologetic, and appreciate that we didn't make any public fuss about it. We left $29 poorer (plus $2 tip before any of...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBeen here a few times for breakfast and coffee while visiting family in Bushwick. The variety of freshly baked goods is unparalleled to many places in my hometown of Pittsburgh, especially with so many vegan options (vegan cookies, scones, cupcakes, etc.)
The atmosphere is pleasant with calming music and lots of plants. There are about 4 mini tables that seat 1-3 people and then a large communal table seating 6+ people. You can eat there or take food to go. Bake Shop also has a very small shopping area with non-dairy milks, cereals, and other specialty grocery items.
This Sunday morning I ate a kale and cheese stromboli beautifully topped with sesame seeds, clearly baked that morning. The stromboli was $6.25 and filled me up until lunch.
I also ordered a quad shot americano, which tasted overextracted & burnt. Despite the subpar espresso drink, Bake Shop is worth the trip for the baked...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreTwo white customers walked in seconds before me, ordering the Blackout Brooklyn. The cashiers, said cheerfully to them, "These slices are free of charge, we're closing soon anyway". I ordered the same, a slice of Blackout Brooklyn, in near tandem, was cut a noticeably smaller piece and then asked promptly to pay the full price, & told "To lessen the burden." Racism in Brooklyn people, IN BROOKLYN!
When my sister called, seeing how visibly upset I was about the experience, to follow up as to why I was charged and not the white patrons in front of me, the cashier said she did in fact charge them but, "the point of sale System is weird so sometimes it might seem like people get stuff free". I was present when she handed them the cake, & when she told them they were getting it for free.
I guess chocolate costs when...
