Why Skip Stand-Up Comedy in NYC? Don't You Dig It?

I have no clue how I found out about this place, but it’s a gem to say the least. Batsu in the EV is a Japanese comedy show….and I’d say it’s a mix of 50% Who’s Line is it Anyways….50% Impractical Jokers…..25% Jacka** and 25% Wild N Out. Batsu itself if the experience of the losing team/person doing something unpleasant as punishment. It's pretty inconspicuous when walking by, so be careful not to pass it. The food was all deliciousness, didn't get any pics as it was dark since we got served after the show started. It's communal seating as well, so you'll be close with others depending on the size of your group. Great diverse show and I’m so thankful I did not, repeat, DID NOT, volunteer to be a participant. Of course one of my friends entered into the mix, and ya’ll, after the first audience participation stunt….I would have lost the contents of my stomach on stage….HARD PASS. I won’t give away what they did…but here is some of their punishment: A guys' punishment (he worked there) was to put his hands onto a tray full of live mouse traps…and just have them cut off circulation to his fingers?!?!?! I mean…come on folks…. I'd totally go back as it seems they do different things each round. Highly recommend if you get to go.

This experience is well worth the money and time!! This is something I would attend again and still have the same enjoyment. Laugh out loud fun from beginning to end! The doors opened 10 minutes before start time. We waited outside and given an intro with to-dos and not-to-dos before we were led in to our seats. We pass through the kitchen and into a dark but Japanese-themed room. The earlier you come, the better seats you get. We paid for VIP ($90/pp) so theoretically a better view but more than half the attendees were VIP. There are Batsu headbands on the table to indicate you want sake from the sake ninja. There were 4 pours during the experience. The price for food is super affordable!! It was neither tasty nor bad, but lovely to enjoy throughout the show. The staff come around for refills throughout the show as well. Expect a dance opener, a host and 4 improv comedians with several bits, and audience participation. Photo ops with the participants and opportunity to buy merch (sadly the t-shirt print started ripping after first wear…) No outside food/beverage allowed.

Batsu was a great experience and I highly recommend it!

• The website tells you that it is a close tight space and it's accurate but I was expecting much worse. But all guests are seated at tables and I really didn't feels super cramped at all.

• The show itself was extremely entertaining and fun. It was a really good time. They utilize audience participation and in some instances, participants are asked to go up onstage. They check in with each group ahead of time and ask one person to volunteer from each party to sign a waiver and potentially be asked to go up. However, they prefer calling on people who are at the show to celebrate something. If you do get called on stage, be prepared to do something extremely gross (like eating sushi off of a slightly overweight man's bare hairy chest. I was thrilled to not get called up).

• The food is delicious and fairly reasonably priced for an entertainment venue like this. The establishment is also cognizant of allergens which is a big plus. My wife has a tree nut and peanut allergy but was able to eat all the food safely. I don't drink alcohol but my wife said the drink she had was delicious too.

•Overall, this is a great activity for a date night or a group of friends. Well worth the price of admission (which is also pretty reasonable!)

Normally when I give overwhelmingly positive reviews, I have something to nitpick about. But I legitimately can't nitpick anything here. The entire experience from when I first walked into the building to walking out was really great. I find it likely that I will come back to Batsu again at some point...

This experience was triggering for me. Shortly after I sat down inside, a man in a "ninja" costume/mask approached my side and stared at my until I noticed. I was clearly frightened. I had JUST sat down and hadn't even oriented myself to my surroundings.

He came back shortly after (read the room, clearly I was uncomfortable) and I felt like I had to take off the Batsu headband because I did not want the attention from him.

I ended up disassociating throughout the entire show after that. Ninja got the hint but I think the company should install some sort of hand signal that an audience member can give to show they do not want attention/participation. (Ex. right hand on your heart or something similar that shows performers that you essentially they want to be treated as just a restaurant guest and a non-participating audience member. This was a "rule" at a Burlesque show I attended in Chicago and had a great time.

If being approached by someone in a mask sounds triggering for you, I highly suggest you skip this experience. I was invited to a friend's birthday here so we had "VIP" tickets near the front of the stage. I think if I had to return, I would have liked to sit against the back wall where I could feel more like an...
