📢 ANNOUNCEMENT! This video marks the debut of our NYC Local Legends series. At @NYCgo, we think there’s no better way to see New York City than through the eyes of a local. In #NYCLocalLegends, we ask notable New Yorkers to share their perspectives on some of the five boroughs’ most vibrant and culturally rich neighborhoods. In this debut episode, Michael “DJ Spynfo” Eagen, celebrated DJ and owner of @SankofaHaus, shows us around Mott Haven in the Bronx. As Eagen—a South Bronx native—invites us along to explore his neighborhood, he connects with friends to reflect on the area’s progression from the 1970s to now. The #SouthBronx is famous for being the birthplace of hip-hop and street art, but there’s also an abundance of heartfelt new offerings there spearheaded by locals. @DJSpynfo shows why you should consider visiting #MottHaven and takes us to some of his favorite spots, including @RosasAtPark, @TheBronxNative, @ChocobarCortesBX, and @BeatstroNYC. 🔗 Find more original stories at NYCgo.com/ExploreNYC (link in bio), and follow us/turn on notifications as we drop additional episodes from across the five boroughs of New York City. #ExploreNYC #TheBronx #NYCgoBronx #ILoveTheBronx #NYCgo #NewYorkCity #ILoveNY

Bronx is the home of Hip-Hop and Boogie Down Productions reminded us of that in the famous dis track "The Bridge is Over". Beatstro is the newest restaurant/lounge in South Bronx that is paying homage to the birth of Hip-Hop and keeping very it BX from the artwork, the menu which is inspired by the community, and even the source of the furnishings. Owner and Bronx native, Alfredo Angueria, wanted to create something that older residents would appreciate and the newcomers could enjoy as well. The entrance of Beatstro has the appearance of a record store with bright hues of green, records that have been donated by local DJs, turntables, and boomboxes. The walls are covered with posters of Jimmy Hendrix, Wu-Tang, Bob Marley, and other prominent musical figures. What lies behind the black curtain is even more impressive such as reds sofas, beautiful full bar, and an elevated seating area with 100 gold globe speakers set into the wall. The menu is a fusion of two cultures that include African-American and Puerto Rican and include items such as Mojo Chicken, Shrimp & Grits, Spicy Shrimp Tostada, and Jambalaya. I didn't get a chance to eat while visiting (sad face), but you can bet I will be back to do so very soon to do so. Beatstro drink menu has clever names such Method-Man-Hattan, The Ruler, Blueprint, Blackouts, Red Top, and of course Gin & Juice. Each drink I tried (and trust I had several) was carefully crafted, smooth, and well priced. Hands down Anotherone was my favorite cocktail and included Wray & Nephew, pineapple, and bitters, and lime. I would have to say close second was Gin & Juice which was made with mango, lime, and mint.

So I took my SO to Brunch for her birthday here. At first, I was put off. They want you to scan the code for the menu. I have an android and really refuse to download an app just to do this. So I asked for a menu. Keep in mind it took a minute for anyone to understand that we were waiting FOR a menu, for me to even ask. I'm Gen X, so we can be anti tech sometimes. Scanning for menus is a no no for me. But the staff couldn't locate the "paper" menus, so I downloaded an app to scan. They forgot to mention there was shotty coverage in the spot, but have wifi available. (Ugh) So I'm waiting a dinosaur's lifetime to download the menu, without wifi access. At this point I'm Han-gry. But then my wonderful server offered endless mimosas, and I relaxed and found my happy place. They found outdated, beta menus, and we ordered. The Food Was Amazing.......My SO had the steak and eggs. I had the Cajun-but-non-Cajun dish called Locrio. I also ordered the Josafina appetizer. It was tart, sweet, and had a little spicy kick. Very good. Different. Over all, very good food. Pictures, graffiti art, vinyl records and music, paying homage to the hip hop/rap artists from the Bronx and beyond. It's a casual ambiance, with contemporary yet classical flare. The cook station is enclosed with glass, and centrally located, so you can watch then work. I really enjoyed this place. Our server, (whom had an air of more-than-just-a-server vibe) (please forgive me, I meant to note his name, and didn't) was forgiving of my initial attitude and was quite attentive. This is a hidden gem in the south Bronx. You MUST visit!

I try to be as fair as possible with reviews but that also means I have to be honest. At first glance this appears to be a nice reastuant, nice layout with proper spacing and welcoming for the most part. I was part of a party of 4 with a reservation at 6pm however our table wasn't ready so we opted to eat outside.. no biggie. Upon being seated we met our waitress who at first seemed fairly pleasant. We were given water however we did not receive napkins or utensils, I know that can be overlooked so we didn't stress about it to much we just brought it to her attention. A few minutes later we all placed our orders, 3 of which included the fried chicken and 2 sides.. the last order included salmon. Long story short we didn't receive our food until an hour and 30 mins after. When the food did arrive I noticed quickly that the chicken was a day old and had been refried, it's actually very similar to the chicken served at Kenedy fried chicken, which wouldn't be a problem but that's not what I paid for. As time went on our waitress seemed over us and honestly it didn't seem like she paid much attention to us, there were people who arrived after us who received their food before us. On top of that our friend who is lactose intolerant was given Macoroni and cheese to accommodate her salmon order ( because it took too long) Something that should be noted is that gratuity is included in your bill which isn't an issue but our waitress definitely did not deserve the generous tip we HAD to give her.. there was also a $30 service fee which we honestly couldn't figure out. To some this up this reastuant is more so for bragging rights.. its for people to go out and talk about how much they spend on food and drinks... there's nothing really hip hop about it, a few throwback paintings and dated play list. Playing Hip Hop in a reastuant doesn't make the establishment a Hip Hop theme. Overall it's just over priced and sub-par.. one and done for me. I read other reviews and I'm glad to see others had a more pleasant experience... but for all transparent purposes... there are a lot more reastuants in the Bronx.
