Not sure what to make of this place. Very limited menu, strong gamy tasting meets and real home made sausages. I like strong gamy though so... Wild boar meatballs. That should say enough. Long story short, good place..go ahead. Eat.
I read online a guy said in his review"the best porkchop I ever had" I made me want this very much. Being a Jew, I don't know, maybe I'm a bit weary of pork (I know keep your opinions to yourself as if you don't sin) anyway, the thing was huge, thick and super fatty. But wait, maybe just the outside edge was all fat and supposed to be. That huge 4 bite chunk of pure fat I cut off though could just as easily been cut off in the kitchen. But, the waitress who is some sort of euro rough road person (not that there is anything wrong with that except she knows nothing of Italian food, clearly not an enthusiast, and tries to argue with people who grew up in Italian households and take this food seriously) Marinara sauce is not simply "sauce" it is a style of tomato sauce. Sauce can be described as it's consistency, taste, texture and ingredients. Anyway, we can speak to people without that attitude. Speaking of sauce, the sauce is the thing most Italian families are proudest of. This family has good meat and sausage so maybe not sauce people. If you are a stickler for sauces, this wont do for you. It is not hard to brown garlic in olive oil, then add tomatoes (that puts you 90% of the way there) but many just refuse to do it right. Puree is not sauce either. Where was I. OK so I have been here maybe 5 times. I also may go back. It is ok. I want to like it more because it is close to home but again, the menu is so limited. So, I didnt like the porkchop and the stone cold waitress (I'm with the wifey so it isnt like I'm looking for anything) noticed I wasn't eating it and took it away without even the slightest hesitation and got me something else (THAT is very good service by the way and makes me return to eat again) then gave me: Spaghetti with: WILD BOAR MEATBALLS!!!! So they get 4 stars instead of 3 because of that. Wild boar meatballs. Wild...boar....meatballs. Yes. that's right. The folks here just are not warm, friendly types. If that is your thing. I love customers. Customers are what we need. We need them, not the other way around. If you like slightly strange Italian food, especially arugula (I hate arugula) Note to chef: Arugula is terrible. Arugula is a fashion buzz thing and you should not follow fashion. Why does 60% of the menu mention arugula? Stop with the arugula, please it is not even something to charge money for. This is a good place though and they know what they are doing. You can bring people here for any reason and...
Read moreWhen your service leaves you wistful for instead having eaten at Olive Garden, there's no amount of good food that can make up for the overall poor experience. Located on the west side, just south of the new Hudson Yards, biricchino has cute ambiance, a small rustic interior with a cozy bar and enough tables that even though you're sitting close to other people you still aren't in their way.
However, the overall service here is downright abysmal. Our waiter seated us and then disappeared for ten minutes, no bread or waters while we waited. Then finally coming back to the table took our drink orders and disappeared for another ten minutes as we waited to order dinner. While I could understand if he was running around to other tables in the restaurant, there were only 3 other tables seated and the waiter was not at any of those either. Finally after showing up to take our orders, the food came within minutes and we were granted another frosty check in from our waiter. Halfway through eating I wanted to order another glass of wine, and all but got ignored as our waiter did everything in his power to not catch my eye. Even if all of this could be mollified by a delicious meal, the food was just ok. The Rigatoni that I ordered came with a few cold spots while the Ravioli di Zucca was the smallest portion I've ever seen, with about 5 squares on the plate, swimming in a lake of...

I was waiting for my Penn Station train with some time and decided to get a cacio e pepe nearby. The reviews were good as is this one; I can confirm that this is a quiet little nook hidden amongst the chaos of the Penn Station area. I was seated immediately and knew what I wanted. The sausages, which seem to be made fresh in-house, were delicious along with the cooked vegetables (they were delicious!) that come with it. Someone else reviewed that the sausages had a "gamey" taste but I didn't find that at all, just fresh delicious spiced sausage. The cacio e pepe was also quite good, though I think I would just get a fettucine alfredo in the future, but that's just my personal taste. The service was swift and friendly and my server was efficient. My only two small complaints are that the bread was served cold, it was a very cold day outside and in general I always like bread warm and slightly toasted, I believe it adds to the crisp texture and is more satisfying. The other is that the bread napkin had a slight stain of marinara sauce. It was washed of course, but diners don't like to be reminded that these are used with other customers. But neither of these small items would prevent me from eating here again, overall I was satisfied and would return here if I were in the area and was seeking Italian...
