During our recent lunch outing, we had the pleasure of dining at a restaurant conveniently located near a subway station. This accessibility added to the overall positive experience.
For our beverages, we opted for Shai (Tea) and Bunna (Coffee). While these drinks didn't quite match our personal preferences, it's worth noting that they offered a unique and distinct flavor profile compared to the usual tea and coffee options.
To kick off our meal, we indulged in Sambusa, a delightful starter featuring a savory filling of lentils encased in delicate phyllo sheets. The accompanying chutney provided an exquisite complement to the dish, elevating its overall taste. We were so impressed with the flavors that we also decided to order some to-go.
For the main course, we selected the Lunch option, which included a generous scoop of four items. Our choices included Enguday Tibs, Shiro, Misir Wat, Yater, Keysis, and a seasonal dish. Each dish was thoughtfully accompanied by Injera, the traditional Ethiopian flatbread. The majority of the dishes left a lasting impression due to their delightful flavors and authenticity, with the exception of the seasonal offering.
It's worth noting that the portion sizes for the Lunch option were quite ample, ensuring that diners left satisfied. Additionally, the pricing was reasonable, making it an excellent value for the quality and quantity of food provided.
In summary, our dining experience at this restaurant was thoroughly enjoyable. We would highly recommend this establishment to others seeking a taste of authentic Ethiopian cuisine and a conveniently located...
Read moreBunna = Coffee. While coffee is everything in Ethiopia, it is one of the many reasons why this authentic Ethiopian Vegan restaurant is one of the most loved, most cherish establishments in Bushwick, Brooklyn (thankfully spared the most unforgiving critic of all: the Coronavirus). For me the main reason that brings me back to Bunna time and time again is the large vegan platter, or their beyaynetu feast. Think of an artist's palette with vibrant dollops of color, full of goodness and vitality. The sharing platter consists of all Bunna's best hits: from steamed collard greens to spicy berbere cooked red lentils, each bringing a unique flavor to culminate in one extremely satisfying experience. The dishes are seated on a bed of inerja (the staple carb of Ethiopia), a few more rolls are served on the side. The inerja is a perfect bedfellow to the saucy sides, but try too, like I usually do, to order a side of basmati rice. Next reason: ok, the coffee. Traditionally prepared, the Ethiopian coffee served here is full of character — strong, stubborn yet warm and full of depth, revealing itself slow in sips. Next BIG reason: Dessert, namely the Bunna baklava. It's flaky, crispy, and wonderfully sweet with coffee-infused syrup and pistachios, seriously good. Lastly, the vibe. Bunna has this special atmosphere that makes one feel like a welcomed guest. Under its roof is an indelible energy, especially in the evenings when the crowd starts packing in, and the DJ is appreciated but not intrusive. It is a haven for communal conversations over a delicious meal and coffee. Try Bunna at least once...
Read moreUnfortunate that I finally found a go-to/favorite Ethiopian place in the city a few weeks before going home for the summer. It took some time to get here but I was very committed to procrastinating my homework, and if you're an ethiopian restaurant offering me a vegetarian combo there's really no limit to how far I'll travel for that. I got the feast for two (though I am only one. Next night dinner. It's called being smart) and apparently they offer this to go in a pizza box which is very smart and fun however I worried it would be clunky for the subway so instead I got a million containers of greatness. My photographs as always are of dubious quality, but rest assured the food was not.
The injera, thank god again, was sour, I hate when it's bland but this was far from it, the perfect vessel for all of everything. I don't know all the names of the dishes but I loved everything I ate. The mushrooms stood out, I love gomen, the split peas and red lentils were doing their thing, something was spicy and idk what it was but it was ASTOUNDING I say really the whole meal I was just thrilled with so I had it again that weekend and loved it just as much. When I picked up my orders both times! The person working was friendly and warm and unbelievably kind, I'll have to dine in next time because I imagine the service is top notch. I'm going to enjoy my summer away from the easy coast but I will say, this spot will be on my mind and I'm looking forward to being reunited with the greatness that...
