Sadly disappointed. I had been wanted to visit Delice & Sarrasin for years so I was overjoyed when I finally had the opportunity to do so a few weeks ago.
It has taken me a long time to write this review because I have felt perplexed about doing so. I try my best not to write unfavorable reviews, especially for food establishments. I understand that one single experience is not necessarily indicative of the ability of the kitchen and staff. Someone can be absent unexpectedly, deliveries may not arrive or be late, and a lot of other factors that are outside of the control of the chef and servers can happen. However, the experience was truly so disappointing that I have ultimately decided to share it.
The restaurant was empty except for one table with four guests which was across where I was sat and then as I waited for my food another table of two were seated in the patio. The service was neither warm nor friendly. There was no negative interaction. It was simply cold and inattentive.
The decor was warm and the most enjoyable aspect of the experience. I give the room a 4, the service a 2 and the food a 1.
I got the “escargot” in garlic butter. The garlic flavor was painfully faint. The mushrooms were cut appropriately and the texture was as expected. The food was so hot that the very first bite burnt my hard palate and it was painful and uncomfortable for about 5 days after I ate it. I was not told to be careful with the dish and there was no obvious steam coming out of it so I had no inkling to suspect that I needed it to cool down.
While I was not blown away by the opening salvo of the escargo, I held out optimistic hope for the main dish I ordered, the escalope de poult aux epinards a la crème. What a genuine disappointment! It was dreadfully tasteless. I forced myself to eat it because I am not one to send back food unless they get the absolute wrong dish (not what I ordered) and I simply can not eat what they serve and because I was very hungry because I had been waiting all day for this meal. I had to wash down each bite with a swig of wine right after just to get through it.
Needless to say, I did not order dessert. I know that one single meal from a full menu is not always a true representation of the quality of the entirety of the menu but this was incredibly disappointing that I will simply not venture back as I have done with other establishments after a less than thrilling first experience. Neither the food nor the service beckons me to temp fate with another possibly equally disappointing meal.
I truly was saddened because this had been so high on my list of places to try for so long. I sincerely hope that it was a...
Read moreTook off two stars because number 1: salt level in almost everything was just way too much and number 2: both entrees were not great and we even had to send one back.
So happy to see two of my favorite cuisine types combined, French and vegan. I totally enjoyed my rosé, they have an 100% vegan wine list. Definitely would like to try the rest. We started off with the cheeseboard which was delicious, the bread could have been more hot that would’ve been nice but otherwise the raisins and nuts were a great addition to the spread. The blue cheese was my favorite out of the four other vegan cheeses we were given to try.
The two sides we had, truffle fries and spinach were loaded with salt. The french fries were fried nicely but could’ve been a bit more crispy. They did have a good truffle flavor but too salty. The spinach was so simple, I believe had some garlic chunks but the salt was level was too much to enjoy.
We had an impossible steak, which was actually the most expensive thing on the menu and it was terrible. They do not ask you if you want a specific temperature so it’s served red inside. To me that was completely weird because I would never order a steak Anything less than well done because the alone color would make me feel sick. Aside from the color and redness inside, it was also cold. We sent this dish back and asked that it be removed from the check rather than being remade. I don’t imagine this being good even if it was fully cooked. For $34 it’s just not worth it.
The chicken stew was decent but again could have been serve more temperature hot. Since it is a classic stew dish and was served in a cast-iron pot I assumed it would at least need to be cooled down. But it was hot for a few seconds unfortunately.
Overall I do like the cheeseboard and the wine that we had and definitely will return for those amazing vegan snails. I look at this more like a drink and appetizer place rather than a place to have dinner or entrées. The concept is cute and interesting and I like the...
Read moreDelice and Sarrasin is a hidden gem in New York City, offering a vegan French culinary experience that is unparalleled. The attention to detail in both presentation and flavor is extraordinary, and the restaurant successfully captures the essence of traditional French cuisine while staying true to its vegan ethos. The rustic decor is a delightful homage to traditional French bistros, creating an intimate and charming atmosphere.
We began our dining experience with the Escargots Beurre Maitre D'hotel, a vegan rendition of a classic French dish. These snails, made from plant-based ingredients, were served in a rich garlic and herb-infused butter sauce. The Foie Gras Végétal was equally impressive. Served with crusty bread and a fig jam, it offered a creamy, savory experience reminiscent of traditional foie gras. Special mention to the bread – it was amazing.Loved both the starters, each bite was oozing out flavors. For our main courses, we ordered the Vegan Coq au Vin and the Pan Seared Scallops. The Coq au Vin featured succulent "chicken legs" simmered in a robust red wine sauce and mushrooms. The scallops were perfectly seared and tender, with a garlicky flavored spinach. Though these were hearty, flavorful dishes but I preferred the starters much.
We ended our dinner with the Banana Crepe, a sweet and satisfying finale. The crepe enveloped roasted bananas and was drizzled with a luscious dark chocolate sauce. It was the perfect ending to an exceptional dining journey.
