Wonderful! Staff is kind, comfy environment and the food bursts with oodles of flavor! I had the Beef Kofta Kabob which is seasoned ground beef and lamb mixed with fresh herbs and onions. I added Qabali Rice a traditional Afghan rice topping made with raisins and julienned carrots.
The rice was the best seasoned rice I ever ate, the raisins and carrots added a light sweet touch which perfectly blended with the kebobs. The combination of kebobs and rice created delightful flavor explosions in my mouth.
I cannot handle spicy food however this food was about flavor and the right mixing of herbs and spices which was excellent. They also give you a yogurt, red and green sauce to choose from to add more flavor with varying degrees of hotness.
The yogurt, garlic sauce added a nice light and creamy touch. The red and green sauces were beyond what I can handle. I did add a tiny touch of green sauce on a small portion of my dish and it kicked up the hotness.
The photos below are of the kebob dish and rice I mentioned and a 12 year old girl from Afghanistan who is now in her 50's. The photo is of a mural in the restaurant. The mural is a painting by a local artist, Poor Rupert. The painting is of a famous photograph, by Steve McCurry in 1985 which appeared on the cover of National Geographic in 1985.
The owner, Mohamed Ghiasi, wants people to experience the culture of his country. I can't wait to go back and try other dishes. Lastly, even the green tea was...
Read moreAfghan is one of my favorite cuisines and Dunya is where I come back to whenever I am craving kababs, bolani, mantu, or any of the amazing dishes they serve here.
Despite having several solid options for Afghan in Queens, I will absolutely give this establishment the nod as the best of the best and go out of my way to eat here. The food is very well made and each bite from the beginning to the end is worth savoring. The pumpkin bolani is one of my most favorite items on the menu and I can never get enough, and their mantu is very filling and delicious. Their kababs are very flavorful, succulent and tender, and the Uzbeki Qabuli Palau is a must! The food is filling but I would definitely save room for dessert and Afghan tea! The ferni, rice pudding, and baklava are all very good and worth sharing.
The service here is wonderful and the staff work hard to make sure customers are provided for; it’s not a white table cloth experience so you have to do your part and be understanding of the pace of things considering it can get very busy for them with diners and delivery orders piling up constantly.
The space is casual but welcoming and I appreciate the homage paid to the beautiful landscape and culture of Afghanistan with various murals and decorations. The land, people, and food of Afghanistan are very beautiful and it’s a privilege to share in the love this...
