hi there!!
First off, I want to say that the staff were absolutely lovely today! Thanks for the warm and cheerful energy. The vibe also had a nice, clean aesthetic!
However, although I would reallyy prefer to only give glowing reviews (maybe especially as a visiting canadian !), I wouldn’t be honest if I said that I wasn’t thoroughly disappointed with my matcha nog/latte. As an amateur matcha enthusiast, I have been lucky to try matcha lattes and purchase matcha tins from Uji, Tokyo, Boston, Sydney, and Toronto, and I have to say that today’s was unfortunately and unexpectedly the worst that I’ve ever had (including matcha lattes I’ve had from coffee shop chains that don’t specialise in matcha).
I bookmarked this spot and was so looking forward to having a matcha pick-me-up this afternoon (especially from a matcha-focused spot!), but was quite disappointed when I found that it tasted more of milk, had a very odd texture (grainy/gritty and thick), and the colour of the matcha (slightly yellow?) did not align with the bright green that I have come to expect from a high quality matcha (which I believe would/should have been used). The matcha flavour was also neither nutty nor vegetal - or at least it didn’t shine through.
To clarify, I completely understand that because I ordered a matcha nog (to try something new!), the flavour and mix of different milks may have resulted in a significantly different experience than expected, but my sister had also found that her oatmilk latte was not very strong in flavour and had an odd texture (despite not being as much of an enthusiast as me). I had no problems with the “eggnog” flavour and spices, I enjoyed the sweetness level (which I requested less, and that was perfect!), and loved the range of plant-based alternatives offered. I have, however, had quite a few oatmilk matchas, none of which have been like this as they have all been smooth, not thick/grainy/clumpy, and have allowed the matcha to shine through.
Finally, whenever I make my own matcha lattes at home, I tend to be quite generous as well (around 3g), but the flavour tends to be much stronger and fresher even as a low to mid range matcha (and I would add more if I thought that the type of milk might overpower it) - neither of which I can confidently say I experienced today for a matcha nog that was nearly $10. I believe it was a regular size as well. There was a bit of a queue after and it was only until I left 15 minutes later that I realised my level of disappointment as I was really trying to give it a chance! (Clearly, I have been thinking about it since - oops!)
I understand that this is quite the essay of a review (I’m a grad student, what can I say) but I felt so compelled that I had to share my honest opinion and wanted to simply let you all know. Before writing, I tried to do research on this place to help me with context, but never would I have thought that I would have to write something like this - truly sorry that this was my first!! Maybe it’s a good spot for people that have just been introduced to matcha, but I’m not sure it’s for me. Thanks but all the best and...

Read moreGrand opening weekend! Came here after receiving an email from Matchaful (subscribing has it’s perks!) about this new location.
Came here today to check out their new store which also has an outdoor seating area. Loved the interior decor, very similar to like a hotel reception area. The outdoor seating area has two heaters (one on each side), but to be honest I could hardly feel it... and I was afraid to increase the heat. There are 4 tables and the bench is all around the border of the seating area.
As for drinks, we ordered the:
Out of the three, Indigo Glow was always my favorite. It is not overly sweet, and pretty smooth. The Vanilla Zen is similar to oatmeal: warm, soothing, and filling. The Ginger Zing was a definitely a kick and healthy. The turmeric and ginger, you definitely can taste the spice going down your throat. Honestly, it wasn’t my most favorite. Personally, I would prefer it as a shot, than a beverage.
I have yet to try the other flavors (they have SOO MANY options), but so far I recommend the Indigo Glow.
Tip: From now until January 1, 2021 all in-house food and drinks are 25% off, so I suggest...
