I recently visited Russ & Daughters Deli and wanted to share my experience. While the establishment is renowned for its heritage and classic offerings, my visit left me with mixed feelings that are worth considering.
Both the classic lox and bagel and the everything bagel were OK. They delivered the traditional vibe expected of the deli, though nothing particularly stood out as exceptional.
The soup had a noticeable salty edge which, for some, might overpower the other flavors. If youâre sensitive to seasoning, you might want to approach this option with caution.
The overall process was a bit on the slower side. It took about 15 minutes to place the order and another 15 minutes for the order to be prepared. While the wait might be understandable during peak hours, it was a factor in the overall experience.
One downside is that there is no parking available. This could be a significant inconvenience if youâre planning to drive there, and you might need to factor in extra time to find alternative parking or consider other transportation options.
Overall, Russ & Daughters Deli continues to be an iconic spot with a storied history, but on this occasion, several aspectsâincluding the foodâs execution, the wait times, and the parking situationâleft room for improvement. If youâre planning a visit, it might be wise to adjust your expectations and schedule accordingly, especially if youâre driving. This experience could still appeal to fans of the traditional deli scene who appreciate authenticity more...

Pastrami Russ is delightful. Lots of sauerkraut and sharp mustard. Glad I didnât put my sturgeon in or it will be overpowered. I even had to take salmon out to get a better taste of it. Pastrami salmon is juicy and well cured, more flavorful than normal smoked fish. I would recommend ordering fish on plain bagel alone, maybe with just a slight smear of cream cheese.
Canât do half half (3 slices per sandwich) so added a sturgeon on the side. Itâs my first time trying it. It is more meaty and lean but not dry at all. Delightful umami.
𼯠Bagels are on the smaller side and manageable for a single meal, or actually normal because other placesâ are too giant. Pumpernickel bagel is relatively softer than the ones I had but still dense and chewy probably because itâs not toasted. Itâs also much saltier (imagine a black pretzel?). Not the best Iâve had to be honest, but itâs my bagel stop before my transatlantic flight.
And I was given xtra a few minutes before store closingâ (I ordered two, thinking whether I should have three for the days to come, but judging by hand feeling there are more in the pouch!) My first week across the Atlantic is saved đ Thank you for making my day anonymous hero!! đڏ
The counter looks like a fish heavenânot hell they have a good afterlife :3 đđź
The packaging is thoughtful and adorable. This new place at Hudson has a matching modern vibe with neon lights.
Looking forward to coming back and visiting the...
Read moreIn my wildest dreams I never thought Iâd spend $25 dollars on a bagel sandwich. But alas, here we are, a shameless tourist willing to splurge at an iconic New York deli. I went with the pastrami cured salmon on everything bagel, scallion cream cheese, and âthe worksâ (which apparently on the streets means: onion, tomato, capers). Suddenly my mortality became palpableâmy limited time on this earth came into focus as I saw myself as a speck in the universal sea of matter and space. I quickly used this to justify laying down $5.50 extra for wild Alaskan salmon roe. You only live once, right? And alas, we had achieved something important hereâthe Rolls-Royce of bagel sandwiches.
To be honest, it was delicious. The bagel was perfectly toasted. Ingredients were fresh. The star of the show was the pastrami cured salmon, which I had never had, but would seek out in the future. Such unique flavor! It was well-accompanied and counter-balanced by the soothing cream cheese and crisp onion. Now you want to know if the salmon roe (justified at $5.50 using existential philosophy), helped elevate this to climactic proportions? No, not really. It added some fun texture but you can go without. It made the picture look nice though.
Pro tip: when we came, the lines were crazy. It looked like they were running an auction house in here. Order online and quietly pick up your order off to the...
