Allegedly and i can be mistaken this place reeks of misunderstanding. I went to purchase a item and subsequently à female employee that works in such a establishment Cafe. Ran immediately to the back as she noticed my mixed heritage complexion. This did not go unnoticed by me. It seems like the cashier can choose, who they want to serve as they like. And I believe this is a form of. Passive aggression. I mean it's not like I can choose which cashier I want . This place reeks of racism I don't know why I mean, even the guy with the glasses that was. Taking care of my item seemed somewhat nervous and his need to be nervous. Was Totally unnecessary. I could be mistaken but it seems like they have. Individuals that THEY . ARE being payed off the books I don't know but it has that general negative vibe to it once you go in. That Cafe does not want you to talk too much but it's unannounced ,because obviously it's in the. Expression in the way they handle the clientele that go there . EVEN the facial expression of the lady (cashier)that was totally puzzle as I walked in to purchase a item, and she almost insisted that the guy . Handle it because a fear that a Karen situation will unfold with her. I guess you could say everything's .IN her eye movements it's just strong distrust and a fear factor that only can be attributed to the color .OF MY SKIN as I was going closer to the cash register and . You could overhear her insisting to the male employee that the guy. Must take care of me I just don't get the attitude was totally unacceptable. I didn't say anything the only thing I said was if you have pizza and that was it . But to clarify I do not go into any establishment including a lotto place to make chitchat or give. Off the appearance of being flirtatious. Moving forward please in the future handle your customers in a polite manner and once you see someone of brown or dark skin don't run to back . Obviously this Cafe is run by individuals that have a mindset like it was 1939. Jim Crow. I went back to 9 / 27 / 2023 at 1pm. And it's extremely prevalent they don't want individuals of mixed heritage going there. You sensed the sense of entitlement the minute you walk in. Make a complaint to the better...
Read moreOverall it is a very nice cafe . However certain things are incredibly frustrating . There used to be a part for a coffe drinkers and the other part was for tea drinker . One has closed . The tea drinkers are not catered for at all .
I don’t drink coffe , I drink tea in the morning . Thank you for a nice brand of tea you carry , but CAN I HAVE UNINTERRUPTED SUPPLY just as coffe drinkers do ? It can be days and weeks when you walk in and ask your usual EARL Grey and it would be “sorry we don’t have any, it is ordered” . How about making it to whole foods and buying a box of high quality tea , until you get your usual supply ?
Recently it has been a week since I ve been coming (I live across and try to eat breakfast daily here ) . So I take my tea with lemon . And for days “sorry we don’t have lemon today” . Shall I stop by at whole FOods and buy you a bag ??
Coffee drinkers are catered for everywhere , but having a decent cup of tea with lemon is a problem that most cafes and restaurants fail to address . I bet if you run out is milk and no longer can make a cappuccino or other type of coffee on your extensive menu - that would be solved within 10 min .
5 out of 10 times I am in a BLANK SLATE , I can’t have FOOD and DRINK . Earl grey with a slice of lemon , am I asking for something impossible ?? Frustrating to say the very least .
Food is excellent . Coffee drinkers around always seem super happy with their FOOD and a DRINK TOGETHER....
Read moreIn all of Flatiron/ NoMad there are plenty of “good” coffee shops to choose from. However, there’s not much at Blank Slate that separates it from the competition; I can barely distinguish this place from “Blank Street” — all naming and franchising decisions aside.
The black coffee is good, certainly better than any drip that sits and sours at Starbucks for hours. But it’s nothing I’d go out of my way for. The Vietnamese iced coffee is actually quite tasty, especially because it’s not terribly common in my neighborhood.
The prices are as expected for this genre of cafe in New York City — overpriced with vibrant descriptions on the menu to distract you from the small portions and mediocre quality.
I had a toasted everything bagel with coconut almond butter. The bagel’s texture told me it was definitely frozen and probably mass-produced, originating from a plastic bag or some supermarket shelf. And the addition of coconut almond butter cost more than the bagel, itself. I was expecting an up-charge but I wasn’t expecting to pay more than double — it certainly didn’t taste like it, either.
Blank Slate is nothing special, more of the same, the usual stuff: it’s cute and inviting, with an interior design that encourages you to stick around and an admittedly refreshing independent color scheme. Unfortunately, it’s just another shade of what you’ve already...
