Since I was unable to accomplish my morning appointment and had an afternoon appointment in the area, I was looking for a place where I could sit down and eat and handle some paperwork. I found Sonnyboy, which looked like it had some meat. This is important for me because I'm in on a high protein, high fat diet, with very few carbs. It's very hard to find a restaurant that serves something that I can eat.
It was still fairly early, so I got breakfast. I ordered a salmon eggs benedict but requested that, instead of the English muffin, it be served on avocado, which was already coming with it anyway. I then ordered scrambled eggs on the side.
It wasn't too long before I got my first dish, the salmon eggs benedict. It was absolutely delicious. The smoked salmon was fresh, the avocado was without a blemish, the poached eggs - once you cut them - were exactly what they needed to be for an eggs benedict, pouring out onto what they are served on, and the hollandaise sauce was flavorful to the point where I didn't need to add any salt to my dish.
The only thing that I took issue with was that the Hollandaise sauce was cold. Now, this is intended to prevent the sauce from going bad, but it is always best to serve hollandaise sauce at warm or room temperature. That being said, reheating the sauce can become problematic if you can't sit there and watch it consistently.
Because the hollandaise felt like it had just come out of the refrigerator, it made the egg feel cold. That did not stop me from getting down on my plate. The eggs benedict came with a side salad, which was also very good. It was a rather large dish overall, but not too much. A well-rounded meal.
Once I finished the poached eggs, I still had some avocado and salmon left over, so I took the scrambled eggs and transferred them to the plate. The scrambled eggs were well cooked, slightly wet like I like them, and fluffy. The texture was exactly what I would expect for scrambled eggs. I did need to add salt for the scrambled eggs, but that's personal taste. Most restaurants will go light on the salt because you can always add salt, but you can't take it away.
I ordered a cup of coffee. I typically like it light and sweet, but since I don't do sugar or dairy, I asked for oatmilk and some type of alternative sugar. They carry stevia, which, while containing erythritol, still gave me the sweetness I was looking for.
Overall, I definitely recommend Sonnyboy. The owner (or manager) was attentive, accommodating, present, and ensured that all of the guests in the restaurant were properly taken care of. It's an intimate restaurant with mirrored ceilings, seating just under 25 people, quiet, and out of the way, just enough where there were customers, but it wasn't overrun. It's definitely a place I'd like to eat again whenever I'm...
Read moreThis restaurant has a super relaxing atmosphere indoors and out. On the roadway on Rivington Street, they allow tables and chairs ‘Parisian Style’ on the actual pavement in the middle of the street. Cordoned off by way of ropes. A jazz ensemble was playing upon arriving with really excellent music listening from the sidewalk. Once inside, we are greeted by one of its proprietors from Australia—a good looking strapping Aussie! The interior spaciousness is it’s bar side seating and tables and chairs lining the walls. Seating approximately up to 45-people if fully packed. But, they [the company joining me] had arrived early ahead of me before the busier dining hours (by 6pm). The menu is similar to a Tapas Bar, like in Spain or Portugal. Orders are small to large plates for sharing basically. With the general entrees also proportional to single entrees. Overall the tastiness is a collage between Tex-Mex, and almost French fare. Yet most would simply say it’s generally American. The choices were also not extremely difficult—Caesar Salads, Southern-Style Fried Chicken Tenders, Bruschetta, et cetera plus a fairer selection on their inventive "in-house cocktails" and imported beer, and selective Australian wines. The cocktails were interesting. Except will pack a powerful punch later—beyond the bar, yet, a lot spicier. (Like a Mojito-Doritos.). And not as sweet as some places usually go. Otherwise afterwards, there was still this felt hunger for more solid food. So by the return home ordered roast duck from a nearby Thai restaurant. All in all it’s wonderful to see meeting people meeting up with their friends too. A perfect amicable sociable ambiance for just that and getting together with others amid friends and family. Recommended definitely. But insofar as the menu items, okay. Not really super fantastic if you wanted to eat something else more substantial. It’s not exactly a steakhouse or an all-you-you-can-eat establishment. But the Happy Hour time...
Read moreI arrived at the restaurant around 10:10. There were two empty tables (one for four and one two-seater), but the server told me to sit at the bar, saying there were no tables available. I asked if I could sit at a table, and she repeated that there were none. I thought maybe they were reserved, so I let it go.
After I ordered, two female servers helped me at different times — one with short hair wearing a grey cropped jacket, and one with long hair. When my food arrived, neither of them checked in to ask how my meal was or if I was okay; they were either on their phones or attending to other tables.
When I ordered the shakshuka, I asked the short-haired girl to add sausage, but she forgot. Halfway through my meal, I mentioned it to the long-haired girl, and she just said, “Oh, she didn’t put that in. If you want, we can make it for you now.” Not a single word of apology.
By 11:15, an hour later, more and more tables became available — up to five empty ones. As I was leaving, there were still three two-person tables open. Only then did a gentleman from the kitchen finally ask me how everything was. (Thank you)
When I paid, the short-haired girl only asked, “Do you want a bag? We don’t take Apple Pay,” leaving the bag on the table. Not a word about my meal, and as I left, no one said “thank you” or acknowledged me in any way.
I’m honestly shocked — how can the service be this bad? The food may have been good, but the complete lack of care ruined the experience. I’ve worked in customer service for 12 years, and I can immediately tell when staff don’t care about their customers. I don’t mind if someone is on their phone, but your attitude, tone, and body language clearly showed that you didn’t care at all.
It’s deeply disappointing. I hope your security cameras captured how unprofessional and inattentive your staff was. I will not...
