This location was the newest for the franchise and I was excited that it was going to be in Flushing (although the Shoppe location made a very big impact on me). The area where they chose to put this particular store was a very smart decision as it is in a very central and busy area in Flushing (near the Fulton center).
Although there are quite a few dessert places in the area, the Spot brand is very well known to New Yorkers and they just recently celebrated their 10 year birthday for being in business. The interior has a good amount of seating in a condensed area. When you walk in there is a mini foyer where you can wait (and during prime busy hours you will be waiting).
During trips to Flushing, I usually try to stop in the store for a dessert or two or three and to see who is working. This location had a rough start in the beginning as the staff was still being trained and locals were getting accustomed to having this new dessert place in the neighborhood. Now, the store is quite a phenom when it comes to top choice destinations for dessert and a pleasant time. The staff is on point ( I will expand on that a bit later) and this is an exciting place to be.
There are seasonal specials that the company rolls out but they have their signature desserts like Golden Harvest and Matcha Lava Cake that are mainstays on the menu. There are good choices for drinks (hot and cold) as well as an assortment of cookies, a new hard ice cream brand called SCOOP that you can take home in pints just to name a few things. My favorites that they recently brought back was the Patcha Sundae and Baked Alaska.
This is a very bustling location that can accommodate some groups of 4 or more when space is available. But it is also a place to bring someone for nice dessert after you have eaten a nice dinner. Or you can come on your own and order desserts a la carte or take advantage of the set pricing for multiple desserts. The prices have gone up a bit since my last review.
Whenever I visit and the experience is always great. I am greeted immediately by the employees, even when it is busy. The level of service here is quite commendable. Everyone is always very upbeat and energetic and super helpful when it comes to recommendations. When there are new dessert items, they let you know right away. I can see they care about the customers and make each and every customer feel welcome. The level of team work at this location is very impressive as well as the work ethic. The desserts are alway plated very nicely...each dessert that is ordered and the orders come to the table in a very timely manner.
I do not know every single employee's name but special shoutouts for this location include Andy, Michelle, Steven, Ricky, Katie and Michelle (plating specialist). Apologies if I left anyone out as every employee here definitely deserves their own props.
I alway recommend this location to anyone who is visiting and eating in the...
Read moreCame here a while ago and it was one of my worst experiences in a dessert shop. I decided to try spot dessert bar due to a family members recommendation and it was absolute chaos. Staff members were extremely unprofessional as we were met with condescending tones nearly as soon as we started ordering. I came here with a friend who looks much younger than me despite us being both university students. Although there is a stereotype that teenagers who come in do not actually order or tip, it is disgusting to profile or stereotype anyone into that group just because of their appearance. I notice the server not taking her questions as seriously and kept pressuring her to order more until I spoke up. As we were ordering, the server told us we must order something from the main menu if we choose to have drinks? This is not a policy listed on their website so it must be something new? Despite everything, we ended up ordering the golden toast from the main menu and decided to leave the drinks for later. After some time, another group sat next to us and some of them ordered the exact drinks we wanted. Looking at the drinks and their proportions (matcha) we were unsatisfied with the quality and ratio and decided to skip that have our main dish instead. The server however wasn’t really happy when we declined after he asked again and spoke to us in a condescending manner for the remainder of the service. He also decided to engage with some activity on the side with another worker that led to him slamming plates and splattering milk all over the floor. Regardless of whether it was intentional or on purpose, the mess should’ve been cleaned up immediately or there should have been a warning to other customers. Instead the milk was left on the ground and the server LAUGHED & SCOFFED after watching the milk splatter from the plates. This was extremely uncomfortable to watch in a dessert shop setting where I’m trying to catch up with a friend after months, in addition to them constantly roaming around you in an odd manner but never saying anything. At the end I received my bill and realized they charged tip incorrectly by adding it within your taxed amount. I did end up tipping 20%+ but this is an extreme malicious method & lack of accountability + respect for customers. Ive also learned that their customer engagement strategy is driven by perceived financial value from a customer rather than genuine service. Regardless of everything, the food was actually amazing, golden toast was crispy out and soft on the inside without being mushy. Strawberries and cream on the side were also delightful. Perhaps I’ll try their other locations and hopefully have...
Read moreMe and my friends went to Spot Dessert last night after dinner, excited to have some dessert. As soon as we walked in, the waitress seated us without a smile or greeting, which already felt a little unwelcoming, but we didn’t think much of it.
When it came time to order, we asked her for recommendations on what’s popular and what would be good for us. In our group, one of our friends wears a hijab (we’re all Muslim, but she’s the only one visibly wearing it). We ordered iced tea, hot tea, and several desserts.
When the iced tea came out, we asked the waitress about the lychee jelly — specifically whether it contains gelatin and what kind it is. At first, she wasn’t sure and went to ask. She came back and told us it was pork gelatin. That was already a concern for us, so when the desserts came out, we asked again if they contained any gelatin. She wasn’t sure, went back again, and eventually told us yes, most of them contain pork gelatin too.
At that point, we couldn’t eat or drink almost anything we had ordered because nearly 90% of their menu contains pork gelatin — something that is extremely important for Muslims to know. We asked why this wasn’t mentioned on the menu, and she simply said she “wasn’t sure and didn’t care because it doesn’t bother her.” That response was incredibly dismissive and unprofessional.
We returned the items we couldn’t consume and instead ordered a matcha lava cake, which was safe. However, when the bill came, the waiter told us that since they had already made the other desserts, we still had to pay 35% of the price, even though we couldn’t eat them. Our total came out to nearly $50 including tips, which felt unfair given the circumstances.
Before leaving, we asked the lady at the front why they don’t inform customers about the pork gelatin, and she had a very rude attitude as well, saying, “It’s not our fault… even the staff doesn’t know what kind of gelatin it is.”
Honestly, if you’re working in a restaurant and selling desserts that mostly contain pork gelatin, you should know this information and disclose it upfront… especially in such a diverse area like Flushing where many Muslim and vegetarian customers eat.
We will never come back to this location and do not recommend it to anyone who avoids pork for religious or dietary reasons. This was a very disappointing and frustrating experience.
Attached is a pic of the lady in counter we spoke to name Michelle (rude and...
