I’ve lived in the neighborhood for over 25 years and Stop Inn used to be an institution but I’ve gone less and less as the quality’s gotten worse. I went in this morning on a whim and it is the last time I will set foot in there.
I should have known the moment I got the coffee, which was mostly water. “Homemade” Challah french toast - which used to be good here - was awful. I took 1 bite and had to stop. It looked ok at first but once I cut into it, I knew there would be no good news for me. Imagine bread that is just oily and soggy while bone dry inside. No rich sweet egg flavor AT ALL. It’s like someone just slapped plain bread on the grill with mineral oil and sliced some bananas on top. Even the watery syrup didn’t help!!
Now the hash browns made something in my soul shrivel up. It was both dry and soggy at the same time, same issue as the French toast. They forgot to season the potatoes and most were undercooked. So yeah, if you like eating plain undercooked potatoes that are super greasy outside and dry everywhere else, that’s what the hash browns were. I threw salt, pepper and two kinds of hot sauce (Tabasco + Cholula! in there to manage 2 more bites, and then gave up and asked for a takeout box thinking I could fix both the toast and hash at home.
Service was friendly, but kind of thoughtless - I had to ask for everything twice even though it was extremely quiet - and no one thought to ask why I only took 4 bites total from 2 plates. I guess they’re used to people not finishing their plates; lady that was finishing up next to me left all her hash browns and half her eggs uneaten.
I paid $25 for this and was so mad!! When I took the food home, I couldn’t fix the French toast. I knew it would be the same issue with the potatoes so I chucked both into the bin and got me some Taco Bell.
How sad! This spot should have been a no-brainer for a proper NYC diner. The interior is old-fashioned charming with two walls of windows and comfortable booths; but looks I’ll be looking at it from the outside only...
Read moreThis is my neighborhood diner and it looks beautiful at night. The food is tasty and it is served in large quantities... i had to be rolled out lmao. I am vegetarian and I had the veggie burger with a cesar salad. My hubby is the polar opposite of me and he had french toast with eggs and sausage . Everything was just yummy that sadly to report food did not win the battle of our tummies. The staff is super friendly and I wish I could give a higher review on them alone. Thank you Teddy for being such a wonderful person-- u made our date night extra happy with your pleasant service and food recommendations. Fyi-- Teddy has the best food recommendations-- 😋 😍 definitely ask him and he will be 100 percent honest and your tummy will be 100 percent happy. He even got a vegetarian (myself) trying the chicken chowder soup.... conversion to the evil meat side lmao ... no but for real I tried the broth and it's the nectar of the gods and just pure tasty. Thank you again Teddy and Stop Inn for a great dinner.
Ps. I came back the next day for my bday bc well I love good food and I had the cheese omelette with home fries and my hubby had the salmon ... again never to fail -- the food went above and beyond my expectations of goodness and freshness. I eat pretty much healthy 100 percent all of the time and this diner has authentic fresh food that only your mom can make. It filled with love and goodness. So thank you again Teddy and Angel (can't forget you for being an absolute joy of a waiter)-- thank you both for wonderful food experience and the bday cake (tiramasu omg-- devoured that cake lmao). If you want good food and an amazing staff that is friendly and hasn't forgotten the art of communication and good food. Then definitely go to Stop Inn...
Read moreIve only had one problem here and it was with the cashier who refused to take my 100 dollar bill because he claimed it was fake. I went up to ask for change so i can leave a tip when i was done with my breakfast but as soon as he saw the bill he claimed it was fake (granted it was an old 100 from like 1980 but i know it was real im a cashier as well and we were taught other ways of checking for false bills.) He passed the marker on the same spot like 7 times and obviously made the mark a little dark. I argued with him that it wasnt fake (i was 100 percent positive it was a good bill) He tells me no he wont take it and as to prove a point he says "look this is pure paper and he grabs the bill and crumbles it in my face and drops it on the table and he says "see its fake" i was extremely annoyed at this point and wasnt going to argue and asked my friend to pay my part of the bill for me , seeing as they werent going to take my money. While my friend paid i went to the citibank a block up and went to get change for the 100 from the tellers and of course i was right it was a REAL bill. I felt like going back to the guy and shoving the change in his face. I understand as cashiers you have to be careful on the fake bills but dont be rude and crumble peoples money and throw it at them. Its just simply rude. ASIDE from that, on the place itself the food is great a little pricey but i absoultey love the homefries. Its what keeps me coming back. I always get the same thing so i cant be of much help with other things on the menu but lucklily food wise ive never had a problem. The waiters that have taken care of my table have always been nice and friendly. Their cheesecake is...
