Looking for something a little "different" to celebrate my birthday this year, we decided on UME in our favorite part of the world, Williamsburg, Brooklyn!
Loving our Sushi for sure, this looked like a different kind of experience (Williamsburg, after all...:) and off we went.
New to the "Omakase" experience, we were greeted immediately by a sweet "Maitre'd" lol, shoes swapped for slippers, hands washed, calm music filling the space, off to a good start.
Zen vibes dining here - sitting at a low table at cushions on the floor with quiet conversation and music continues in the background. Ume is a small restaurant, as there was only about 6 well spaced tables. Very comfortable.
Asked the usual food allergy questions by our sweet server. I try to keep Kosher (even in non-kosher restaurants); sometimes a challenge for restaurants not entirely familiar. To Ume's great credit, they were very familiar with my restrictions, and proud to explain no shellfish, etc on our Sushi sets as they were served!
Beautiful, fresh, and delicious food, presented professionally and surprisingly filling.12 different varities, an assortment of salts and spices, and everything you need to make your own rolls.
Also, paired our food with some yummy Sake/wine along the way.
We really had fun to try so many different types of fish and choose what salts and ingredients to add. We particularly liked the yuzu salmon others. The fish is super rich on their own and even better when made into a roll with the speciality salts on top. *Please check out the pics which help explain the experience.
The staff was also so nice and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our dining experience. So cool in fact, that our server took a few moments to sit with us and is our new friend.
Ume is a fantastic overall dining experience. Much different than the "busy" Williamsburg vibe of most other local restaurants (no judgment) and certainly a romantic date night. I'd highly recommend experiencing Ume and as they say, Go enjoy with an...
Read moreMy sister and I took our father to Ume for his birthday. Ume isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a full experience from the time you walk through the door to when you leave. We decided to make our reservation in their garden and it was worth it. The atmosphere is so clean, refreshing, and comfortable that we completely forgot we were still in Brooklyn. It’s not just the décor that set the atmosphere either; the service was above and beyond. You don’t receive hospitality like this often, which makes the experience even more special and memorable.
I regret not getting our server’s name because he felt so genuine and positive. Because of a big storm passing through, our food was delayed a bit. Honestly, we didn’t even notice. I’ve waited significantly longer at other restaurants for my food. But our server so apologetic for having us wait even that little bit of time, he made sure we had the best experience possible for the rest of our meal. When he found out it was my dad’s birthday, he even surprised us with (easily) the best vanilla gelato we’ve ever had at the end. The people there have such kind souls, and I want them to know it’s so so so appreciated. They add so much to the experience.
In terms of the food; saying the menu was amazing is an understatement really. You can tell there was thought put behind every word on the menu and placement of the food on the platter. There’s a reason why there are recommended instructions on how to eat the Prix Fixe meal, so we can enjoy the food in the best way possible. Definitely take your time and savor every bite!
Ume has a level of perfectionism that I really admire. I’d genuinely love to know the thought process behind the choices made from the décor to the combination of ingredients and seasonings. This was an unforgettable experience and I know my father will be talking about this A LOT from now on. It’s completely worth the price! You’re not just paying for the food, you’re paying for something I’d...
Read moresomething to take note of- -reservations only, online, they dont even answer phone calls -large groups beware, you may be seated in their garden, and if its summer.. just know that its gonna be SCORCHING hot/humid with fans and 2 AC that has error messages on it -you have to take off your shoes upon entering -theres SHARED slippers by the bathroom, but who knows if anyone cleans it ? have they not heard of foot fungus that can be transferred?? with that being said, dine at your own risk
heres our group's experience. we had a party of 8, reservations made online so no one warned us the garden was gonna be a terrible experience.. we arrived and the fans legit said 95 degrees! by the time we were getting up to leave it dropped to 90 degrees. it was even hotter INSIDE than outside! we pleaded with our host several times if the AC is working because it clearly says "E8" not "68" for temperature. but apparently they said it was "working," I even walked up to the ac and put my hands underneath and felt NOTHING. we were surrounded by tower fans and individual fans at our table.. but what breeze are we getting in a 95 degree room with NO ventilation? someone from our table felt nauseas by mid meal and another left immediately after lunch was served because she wouldnt stand it anymore. they gave us 1 bucket of ice and 1 pitcher of water for 8 guests who are sitting in 95 degree room.. not even cold personal towels, not even 2 more buckets of ice and more pitchers of water.. if we were elderly we could've caught a stroke! not even that but how fresh can the fish be when served in 95 degrees?? we were disgustingly disappointed with this experience. we felt like the host or restaurant could've done more. we paid $150 per person for this sauna sushi experience.
the food was "good" but not amazing. we did not enjoy our experience and dont think this place lived up to its hype in terms of service, ambiance and food. wont be dining here again and would...
