Tucked away on a side street you’d probably walk past if you weren’t paying attention, this tiny hole-in-the-wall pizza joint doesn’t look like much from the outside — but one bite, and you’ll know you’ve found something special. The crust? Perfectly crisp on the bottom with just the right chew. The sauce? Bright, tangy, and clearly made from actual tomatoes — not some sad, flavorless paste. And the cheese? Melted magic. Whether you’re grabbing a plain slice or going all-in with a sausage-pepperoni combo, every bite somehow hits that nostalgic, soul-satisfying spot. It’s small, it’s cramped, and if you blink you’ll miss it. But that’s part of the charm. You’re not here for tablecloths and ambiance. You’re here for pizza the way it’s meant to be — fast, hot, greasy in the best way, and stupidly delicious. 5/5 – If heaven has pizza, this is what they’re serving.

A shining 5 stars for Underground Pizza! I’ve had the pleasure to visit here several times over the past 18 months and can attest to the consistency of delicious food, fine service and atmosphere. Perhaps one of the last true classic NY pizza joints and should not be missed. Their pizza exceeds expectations in terms of taste and texture, and for NY pizza that’s a high bar - crunchy crust, savory sauce, and zesty upside-down pepperonis are mouthwatering. But more than the food is the soul behind the food. It’s a family business since 1979 - family icons and interests are displayed proudly on the walls, welcoming the customers and community. Staffed by true-grit New Yorkers getting the job done, year round, no excuses! There’s a clean & comfortable inside dining space, with cushioned seats, TV, and bathroom. And there’s an incentive if you pay in cash!

I was staying at a nearby hotel and was researching where to get a good slice. The two that ended up being tops were underground pizza and joes so I did a pizza taste off between them. Spoiler alert: Underground Pizza won. I got 3 slices: pepperoni, mushroom, and buffalo chicken. Underground pizza has slices that are thin but not floppy, high quality toppings (beautiful pepperoni cups), and cheese that truly compliments the whole experience. Joes slices were slightly larger and had a slightly better topping distribution but Underground was the winner in a big way. Also appreciated talking with the owner when I told him what I was doing. Excellent guy and hope he reads this because I told him I’d come back and tell him who won!

On a whim, my friend and I stopped by this pizza shop while searching for a place that served high-quality pizza with vegetarian options. From the moment we walked in, the staff went above and beyond, guiding us through their menu and offering thoughtful recommendations. As we chatted with the team and the owner, Ben, we learned about the shop’s rich history—an impressive legacy for such a small establishment.

The food was nothing short of fantastic, served piping hot and packed with flavor. We tried a variety of items, including a margarita slice, a pepperoni and sausage slice, buffalo chicken wings, and a few other dishes. The pepperoni and sausage slice was a standout, with a smoky richness from the pepperoni that paired perfectly with the sausage. It wasn’t greasy at all, which was a pleasant surprise, and it left me feeling satisfied without the heaviness greasy pizza often brings. The margarita pizza was equally impressive, with fresh, flavorful ingredients and you can really taste the cheese flavor.

My personal favorite, however, was the buffalo chicken wings. Unlike wings from other places, these were truly spicy, tender, and served fresh from the kitchen. Ben shared that everything is made from scratch, and it really shows in the quality and flavor of the food.

Despite being located in the city, the prices were reasonable—neither cheap nor overly expensive. The value for the quality you receive is excellent, leaving you feeling like you've gotten "bang for your buck."

Overall, this place exceeded my expectations in every way. I’d rate it a 10/10 and highly recommend it to anyone. I’m already looking forward to...

Excellent customer service and great ny handmade pizza freshly prepared daily by the guys. This is a great example of something that for alot of people is a dying institution. Years ago ny pizzerias of this quality were widespread, now that the rents are inflating and the affordable is becoming gourmet and chic, it is a challenge to find a good slice on the fly. Well here is a real pizzeria. The guys know their craft and have a great understanding of their ovens and timings and can get your slice and pie just right, as long as you let them know how you like it. Seeing them in the early morning is a display of all the years of experience and expertise. It gave me an appreciation for the shop and the skillu they make pizza with. Handmade and very precisely crafted. Really good at this. The added relaxed and accommodating attitude of the owners /operators is what seals the deal. The price is definitely higher than what you expect but the quality is good and the location makes it understandable that they pass on the cost of doing business in NYC fidi. You won't be...

When we arrived at Battery Park, NY I set a pizza restaurant search and saw the great ratings for Underground Pizza and recommended my family and I eat there. There’s a lot of construction off Broadway right now, so the Yelp map directions threw us off, but we ended up passing the New York Stock Exchange building and enjoyed a few nice buildings along the way. Once we arrived we were immediately greeted by one of the servers and given the chance to order. We were pretty hungry so we ordered 5 different slices of pizza to try a little of everything and share. We asked if they could cut the slices in thirds and they said, “Of course”! The pizza wasn’t greasy and every slice we had hit the spot! Then to our surprise the owner, Ben, introduced himself and gave us a great story about how Underground Pizza came to be. Great local spot, with great service and staff! Will definitely be back on my next trip to New...
