I’ve been to the Green Eggs Cafe twice and, while I did not enjoy my first trip, I would recommend it overall.
Trip 1: During my first trip, I ordered the Cinnamon Bun French Toast and a standard Bloody Mary. The french toast was a spectacle: a tall tower of cinnamon icing with a mint sprig as a colorful garnish. It smelled great, looked great and the portions were plentiful.
That said, when I cut into it, I was shocked to find the center hollowed out to make room for more of the cinnamon brown sugar sauce.
It was entirely too sweet and the lack of actual toast made the entire dish feel like goop in my mouth. Even if it wasn’t a truly American sized dish, I wouldn’t have finished it. It was not a pleasant eating experience.
The Bloody Mary lacked any distinguishable taste or flavor and I barely felt a buzz.
Trip 2: After my first visit, I was not keen to return, but my partner had a great experience the first time around, so I chalked it up to me choosing poorly during our first time out. The second trip went much better than the first. I avoided the mistakes I made last time and ordered The Kitchen Sink (a skillet with eggs, potatoes, sausage, and a biscuit covered in gravy) and The Klause (a mix of Prosecco, Elderflower syrup, mint, and lime).
Much like the Cinnamon Bun French Toast, The Kitchen Sink is a spectacle. Served in a cast iron skillet, this monster of a meal was massive and intimidating, like it was challenging me to finish the whole thing in one sitting. I knew as soon as it was placed in front of me that this meal was destined for a take-away box, but that didn’t stop me from eating too much at the table. It might not photograph well, but holy wow did it smell and taste delicious. It was savory, flavorful, and obviously very filling. It was a little heavy on the potatoes and the biscuit was a bit too dry for my liking, but the dish as a whole was incredibly enjoyable and it keeps well enough in the fridge so leftovers provide something to look forward to.
The Klause had me impressed after the first sip. While the mint sprig and lime wedge were less than fresh, the garnish was really the only downside to the drink. It was refreshing, flavorful and strong enough to get a bit of a buzz going. I would return to Green Eggs Cafe JUST to get another one.
Some things consistent with both trips: -Excellent Service. Staff was personable and quick. There was never a moment when we felt like we were waiting too long. -Fun, current popular music. While the atmosphere itself is kind of non-existent, I found myself singing along to most of songs played and, while that’s not “the point” of a restaurant, it nails the fun brunch vibe. -Cash Only, Cost Effective: Green Eggs Cafe is cash only, but they have an ATM at the front of the restaurant. The menu itself is extremely cost effective. I don’t want to say “cheap” because that gives off a negative connotation, but yeah this is easily the cheapest brunch I’ve had in Center City and that alone makes it worthy of your attention.
TLDR: I would recommend Green Eggs Cafe, just don’t get the Cinnamon Bun French toast if you’re over...
Read moreTo start off, I have been to the Green Eggs Cafe in Northern Liberties and the one on Walnut multiple times and have always had a wonderful experience there. Which is why I was surprised by the terrible service my mom and I received today at brunch.
The wait was about 45 minutes for a table for two, which is actually pretty quick considering how busy the restaurant was. The hostess was nice and organized. After being seated, we received our water and ordered. My mother ordered the tofu scramble and bacon because of the menu the scramble comes with meat or slices of avocado. After ordering, our server came back to us 5 minutes later to tell us her order doesn’t come with meat (which was a lie). I wasn’t too upset about that, but then we had a long wait for our food. At one point, another server came up to us and asked if we’ve gotten our food yet because we had been waiting there so long. Literally, 5 minutes later our food appeared. Still I wasn’t frustrated, my food was good and I was having a nice conversation.
The breaking point for me was 10 minutes after we received our food someone (not our server) looked me in the eye and gave us the check without saying anything. My mom and I were still eating and we didn’t ask for the check. There was a long wait so maybe the restaurant was automatically dropping checks to everyone who was seated around the time that we were. The only issue was that the 4 tables around us were seated and received their food before us, but did not have their checks yet. I waited another 5 minutes, the tables around us had finished their food and were obviously looking around for their server but still no one dropped their checks. Our server never came back to our table after we received our check after she walked passed our table more than a few times. I wanted to order a drink to go, but our server never made eye contact with us again so that never happened. I even asked someone to got our server and instead took our money and walked away.
Did I also mention that we were the only black people seated in that area and the people at the other 4 tables were white or white passing? Yeah, I don’t know what’s going on there but I don’t appreciate it. If you want to be respected as a costumer and a human being, don’t go to this Green Eggs Cafe location. I will also acknowledge the fact that our server could have just been awful and that the other staff might be amazing. Again, that was my first time at that location. However if you want consistently excellent service and food, go to the Northern Liberties and walnut street locations.
Honestly, I hope everyone has a better experience...
Read moreThe moment we got there the female host outside was leaning on the post where she’s stationed as if she’s bored and hate her job. It seemed off from the second we walked up. The host stopped us and asked if we would like to be inside or outside and we chose indoors since it’s 90 degrees. As we went indoors we weren’t greeted or told we had to wait, instead we just waited looking confused. A waitress came inside and we asked her a question and she responded and we are the only ones waiting at the time. A couple comes in after my bestfriend and I, the host comes straight to the caucasian couple that came in minutes later, when she already greeted us and seen us there alone waiting to be seated. I felt uncomfortable when the couple had to tell them we were there first, especially when they knew this already. Things get worse. Our waiter comes over and goes MIA for a little while. Then finally shows up and we order our drinks and he asked if we were ready to order our food, we replied yes and he still left. He brought out our drink, the strawberry fresh and when he did bring it out it tasted like seltzer water, not like a strawberry alcoholic fruity drink. We asked him for a new drink and he persisted that he can make the drink taste better, and honestly it did taste better, but no one else was sending their drinks back to be remade. Another thing which was strange is that I didn’t see any black employees. But anyways, we finally received our food after another table was there after else and ordered way more than us. Also the waiter kept going to tables that he fixed already to re fix, it was just very unprofessional and seemed to reek of favoritism (you know what i mean by that.) Anyways the food was good, my best friend said his creole shrimp and grits were cold, but my steak and eggs were good and hot. I would just try another green eggs cafe next time, but this is the last time for this location. The waiter is in one of my photos by the way. Also you can tell in one of the photos how our drink was watery compared to when...
