Recently dined at La Jefa and had an outstanding experience—highly recommended for anyone seeking unique, authentic Mexican flavors. The atmosphere was lively, and the service was warm and personal.
We had the pleasure of meeting Dan, the owner, who was incredibly welcoming and offered excellent recommendations rooted in the cuisine of Guadalajara, Mexico. A memorable moment: the staff sang a birthday wish in Spanish, complete with a celebratory shot delivered directly to the guest’s mouth—fun and full of personality!
What We Tried: • Cecina – House-made beef jerky served with the most flavorful guacamole I’ve ever had and pickled chilies. Truly unforgettable. • Quesadilla Negra – Calamari, quesillo, and a blistered chile mayo wrapped in a blackened tortilla. Unique and delicious. • Tetela de Plátano Macha – A fantastic blend of masa, plantain purée, and pipián verde. The creamy sauce was a perfect complement. • Drinks – The Paloma and Tinto de Verona were expertly mixed and refreshingly perfect for a hot day. • Wine – The chilled Hurluberlu Cabernet Franc was a surprisingly excellent wine choice—light, bright, and very enjoyable. • Dessert – The Lemon Cake with lemon curd, guajillo jelly, and toasted meringue was a standout finish. Crisp crust, vibrant filling—just phenomenal.
Overall, La Jefa delivered a memorable culinary journey with standout flavors and vibrant hospitality. Can’t...
Read moreWow. I had read about La Jefa and was excited to try it. It did not disappoint. Number one. There's something fun about jaunting around the back of Tequilla's to find this little jewel box. As soon as I walked in, I just loved the casual & open vibe of the café paired with the enveloped Milpa bar in the back. The service here is stellar. I let them know that it ws my friend's birthday and the didn't skip a beat. Dan, the owner, and other wait staff were informative on thr menu yet casual and friendly. The cocktails are unique, and infused with things like marigold liquer, strawberry yakult & cooked agave. The food. Wow. I don't eat meat, so asked to have the beef Jerky on the side ( for my friend)instead of with their guacamole, which was probably the best guacamole I've had in recent years. The lime was so super fresh. I could have devoured a big bowl. Their cauliflower tostada was really good .Really tasty was their fish paired with a cauliflower puree -really flavorful. Desserts. Yes. Yes.. We had both choices offered . A concha with raspberry filling and their lemon curd cake with, again, a super fresh filling. I think that's the key word for everything we had. Everything was just ripe with flavor. Also. you can just tell that a lot of love was poured into this place....
Read moreI had a fantastic lunch today at La Jefa. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. I was lucky enough to meet one of the owners, Dan Suro, who was working behind the bar. We chatted about my fond memories of his father’s restaurant, Tequilas, and it was clear the same passion for authentic cuisine and hospitality lives on at La Jefa.
Dan took the time to explain the menu to nearby patrons, sharing its roots in Guadalajara, which added so much meaning to each dish. I ordered the Huevos Alapoche—and wow, it absolutely knocked my socks off. Every bite was packed with flavor, balanced perfectly in a way that felt both bold and comforting.
To drink, I tried the Agavette, and for the first time in my life, I found myself describing a coffee drink as refreshing. It was unlike anything I’ve had before. I also stole a sip of my friend’s Tascalate—a subtly spiced, deeply satisfying drink with a Mexican hot chocolate flair that I’ll definitely be coming back for.
Everyone I interacted with greeted me with a smile, and the genuine hospitality made the experience even more special. I can’t wait to return to La Jefa. This...
