Came in with my wife for a New Year’s Eve dinner and we were definitely impressed by the atmosphere and design of the restaurant upon entering. The tables are constantly being flipped and cleaned and the entry way fees like the upscale restaurant vibe you’d expect based on the reviews. Live music played (excellent performers without being too loud for conversation at the table) and there are nice views of the kitchen and street, depending on where you’re seated.
Like several other reviewers, the wait staff was excellent at the start of the meal. We were pleased with the frequency of the table check ins and, given how busy it was on NYE, our server was doing great remembering us. I had the crab cake to start and she had the beet salad, which were both excellent!! Took a little while and a reminder to get some cracked pepper to the table, but totally not a big deal.
For dinner, I ordered the filet mignon with honey sriracha brussels sprouts and my wife ordered the sea bass with the au gratin cheddar potatoes. This is where things started to dip. The proteins were absolutely exquisite - the steak was medium and cut beautifully. Could have used a slight bit more salt, but again, a beautiful piece of filet mignon so no complaints. The sea bass was also delicious and cooked perfectly- good size too which was a pleasant surprise for me. Where the ball was dropped was the “accompaniments” (sides). The brussels sprouts were absolutely not honey sriracha. They were drenched in mustard seeds (think charcuterie board) and disgustingly sour, which took so much away from the steak. Similarly, the cheddar potatoes were smothered in cheese, to where my wife had to “uncover” the potatoes from what looked like fondue. When our server, who at this point seemed primarily occupied with other tables, finally returned to us, I shared my concern with the brussels sprout flavor, wondering if there might’ve been a mix up. I still wanted the honey sriracha ones that were on the menu (sesame seeds and mustard seeds have very distinct flavors) but he seemed to be so in a rush that he wasn’t hearing me (basically looking at someone else while I spoke to him- not a great feeling) and just offered to remove them from the bill - not an actual solution or address of the issue that these were not what I ordered to begin with. My wife could manage with her cheesy potatoes, but given the cost of the food and The restaurant’s focus on fine dining, we were very disappointed with both the service and attention to these details. He assured us that a manager would stop by the table, but after 45 minutes of waiting no one came by.
AThe side issue was annoying but we were still there to enjoy ourselves and spend a pleasant evening eating well together so we ordered dessert. We ordered the warm chocolate cake and that was very good, but it took 25 minutes from ordering to arrival- yes I time these things. The long wait times between courses really kills the energy and mood because the meal no longer feels like an experience but rather a waiting game where you basically have enough time to start getting tired or hungry (or both) again despite having placed your order. By the time the cake arrived, which came before any management did (disappointing even if it was NYE), my mood was shifted and the night felt dampened. It was difficult to enjoy the cake after all this but my wife did and so I won’t say it was anything but good/fine.
Overall, I’d say we were left unimpressed. We travel to and enjoy many fine dining establishments and this wasn’t the quality experience we expected or typically receive when at similar which is not fun to write because we honestly want to support these more unique spots. I decided to write this review because I think that, for $300+ people deserve to feel like their meal was worth the price and the details and attitudes of the experience matter in addition to the accuracy and quality of the food. To leave a restaurant like this feeling dejected isn’t value and I hope this can be improved for others’ experiences...
Read moreCelebrated my mother's birthday today at Eddie V's. The food was every good, and the service was truly excellent! The restaurant is beautiful. Even the bathrooms are upscale. The restaurant staff went above and beyond to ensure this day was memorable. They decorated the table with birthday confetti, wrote my mother a card, and gave her a free bananas foster dessert, which she said was lovely. I tried the jumbo gulf shrimp with crab, Brussels sprouts, crab fried rice, truffle Mac n cheese, creme brûlée, and the chefs cookies.
Firstly, the complimentary bread was lovely. It is served with high quality butter and it's very fluffy in the inside, crispy on the outside. For my main entree, I ordered the gulf shrimp. The portion was fairly large, but it did cost $37. The stuffing was a little on the acidic side, but the shrimp was tasty and it has plenty of crab. The sauce was good, too. I sampled the swordfish special, which was quite good. The Parmesan sole is bready and somewhat sweet, so unless that sounds appetizing to you, I'd recommend not ordering that.
All the sides were awesome and very reasonable priced. You could have the crab fried rice as a meal. There is so much juicy, sweet crab! The rice is fluffy and flavorful, not too spicy. However, don't expect it to be similar to Chinese style fried rice. It's a lot more buttery and rich. The Brussels sprouts were sweet and crispy. A good vegetable side. Mac n cheese had a unique flavor. It's very rich, somewhat runny, but has a flavorful that is unlike any other Mac n cheese I ever had. Not sure if I'd order it again, but I love the crab fried rice!
Finally, the desserts were amazing. I was able to take some creme brûlée home with me. The cookies are pretty good, but not outstanding. Tasted a bit like brownies. The brûlée itself was pretty average too. It's served with berries on top. However, you must try the bananas foster. The fruit is delicious and so is the base, without being too sweet. Plus, it is served with ice cream and flambeed table side! Awesome surprise. The waitress (Kayla I believe) was very attentive to our needs.
All in all, Eddie V's is a nice choice for some upscale dining. It's got a great ambiance and the service is truly excellent. There's even live music after 7 pm. The prices are quite steep, though. The food is pretty good and I may return just for the crab fried rice!
P.S. - All the photos are leftovers. The actual portion sizes are...
Read moreLet me start by saying we love this place! But my lastest experience was horrible! We have been here many times, everything from Thanksgiving dinner to random Tuesday. Last year we had my birthday party there. I don't know what has happened there but it's a hot mess now when trying to book a larger table! I don't think that they have good communication in that restaurant. So I had a party of 10 again for my birthday and I tried to book online (there is a drop down menu that goes to 10) but unfortunately when you do that is says "party too large, call the restaurant" so I call and I leave all the details. No one called back for days and then with the wrong information saying I wanted a table for 20 (this would be, I assume the events manager) So this person tells me to book a table of this size I have to put a credit card down and she will email me the info. I still haven't received that! And she also stated that there would be a $1000 minimum for food and drinks. Again this isn't a problem as my bf and I never had a check for less than $250 there. She also kind of talked down to me. By stating if we didn't think we would make the $1000 we could order apps for the table. Well Thursday comes and my party was for Monday and I still hadn't received the info in my email. So I call the restaurant again and then I had another unfortunate encounter with the hostess. I stated that I had called before and I was trying to make a reservation for 10 again, and then she said "well we are closed now" and we have changed our policy you need to talk to the event manager! Now I'm let's just say salty as it should NOT be this difficult to make a dinner reservation. I leave a message for corporate...and in the meantime I made another reservation at another steak house not Darden (not like we don't have any other choices in Pittsburgh. That took me 2 minutes with a confirmation and no phone calls!
Well guess what happened on Friday. The regular manager called. Then the event manager. I missed both and didn't feel the need to call back. But I called and spoke with again another host to tell her that we wouldn't be coming because I had no idea if event manager made the reservation and I didn't want the servers to suffer. Then on Monday the event manager called me twice. What a disaster. And Eddie V's really missed the mark on this one. And we had an amazing dinner at another...
