Just want to start this off, so it is at the top, by saying I got a cup of coffee grabbed out of my hand today for offering to set change at the counter to make things go quickly. I went in, there were four people ahead of me, taking their time which is fine, so I decided (getting just a self serve drip coffee) to ask the employee if I could put $2.50 of change on the counter in order to get in and out. Dropping change for self serve drip coffee is a PortlandAmerican cafe tradition. This guy had the nerve to ignore me for 10 seconds while I was trying to quickly get his attention, then say “maybe next time you could wait your turn or until I’m done with this customer”. He was not speaking. He said it was fine, I went to go get my coffee, as I said I didn’t interrupt you, and he runs up to me, in a packed house, grabs the coffee out of my hand and attempts to kick me out of his minimum wage job. Good luck in the future with your high school customer base!

I had faced a couple small disappointments earlier that day. I arrived at this beautiful house and warmed myself under the heat lamps they have out on the porch for people waiting to order. I got the honey latte and the breakfast sandwich with avocado. The honey latte was deliciously hot and sweet, exactly what I needed. The sandwich was a visual delight to unwrap from it's paper wrapping and was SO TASTY. The eggs nice n soft, a tiny bit of crispy fried cheese on the outside that had presumably escaped on the griddle (if intentional, bravo), everything married with a tangy sauce. I sat on one of the benches outside the porch and watched the beautiful changing leaves and munched on my sandwich. Felt refreshed, relaxed and ready to hit the road. Don't know how to pronounce the name, but will...
Read moreTucked away, cozy gem. Upstairs and downstairs, full of comfy, quiet nooks. Good place for small groups to talk in relative privacy. Near-perfect house-made pastries. When I tried the almond bar, I melted.
Coffee was solid. I had a Mexican brew, "Santa Maria Yucuhiti". Deliciously sweet and fruity, perfect with cream. Menu days they use 'Holy Kakow!" cacao powder for there chocolate-infused drinks. That's the good stuff. So I you they don't play around.

The German name is the surname of the late mother of the founders. She owned an antique shop next door until she passed, and now much of the store's upper reaches are dedicated to displaying her antique toaster and egg beater collections.
They keep alphabetized storage for loyalty punchcards! I am always losing my punchcards, so this is a perfect system for me.
