I want to love this place, it's the closest coffee shop to my new work. I've been a patron for about two weeks. The older lady is pleasant and sincere. The young girl with the bob is pretty off putting, she stares at you while you enter a tip, she likely hasn't heard of tact. If you sit in there for awhile you can hear her tone change often with different customers which tells me she's not sincere.
EDIT I just got coffee, the long curly haired girl with the brow piercing just gave me the most pleasant and positive experience so I'm changing my rating from 1 star to 4!! She charged me for the small cause I brought my own cup, something the girl with the bob did not offer or do! She was patient and gave me more information on the drinks then I have previously been given. She makes me want to come back, if they could clone her they'd have 5 stars!! The girl with the bob needs an attitude check.
EDIT AGAIN oh my goodness I got the bob girl again and all the attitude she can give. She's the only one the pulls out tips right away before you walk away, again likely cause of no tact or she enjoys being petty. Taking my 4 starts down to two stars. She has a negative aura, a fakeness, and she's just plain rude. Why can't I only encounter the pleasant long curly haired girl with the brow piercing???! It makes me sad and disgusted when I get rudeness from a complete stranger who is who suppose to be servicing the general public. I am such a positive person, only negativity effects me. Her fake buys, and shallow talk pains me. She sounds nice to some people, but a person who is selectively nice ISN'T truly a nice person. Overheard her say 'it's on the hutch twice', turns out it wasn't -yet rather than apologize to the customer she said 'thank you for checking'. WTFudge, how is that the appropriate response, an apology was owed. Maybe I should be looking for the NEXT closest place to...
Read moreI put 4 stars because of (half) the service. This place is my favorite café, and I love the croissants!! The coffee is literally some of the best Ive ever had!! That is no exaggeration, i go out of my way to get their coffee. Their bathroom is a cool and covered in years worth of names and sayings and cool stickers. Really gives the place great character!
Now, as for the service.. The older guy who owns the place is REALLY freaking rude and profiles everyone remotely simply because theirs a methadone clinic around the corner. Also I have to say the younger guy that works there thats been there for a few years is a total D-bag. I watched him in one of his many disgusting, public humiliation fits, where he YELLED across the coffee shop the most awful stuff to a girl and she broke down into uncontrolable tears over a misunderstanding she wasn't even involved in. He is a spoiled brat. It disgusted me so much i didnt come back for months and i will never tip him again. On the other hand - the managers daughter who works there is generally nice but is often on her phone and she doesnt seem to want to work there. Other than that (i mean cmon we all hate work - especially with family) she does what needs to be done and that's about as much as I can say for her. There used to be a black girl who worked there who brought so much, much-needed, good energy into the place, and I dont ever think i saw her without a smile. Then the white girl with an A frame bob haircut - same. Wonderful barista! I became a Grendel lover again because of these two women. And as for the adult woman, whom I believe is the owners partner (married or just business); she is stern when she has to be - and she has to be - believe me. But she keeps the place in check, shes absolutely pleasant, keeps the tables clean, chairs pushed in, bathroom is always clean, and...

This place is quirky and diverse. Everything from boiled eggs to handmade sandwiches how your mom would make them and sweet tea to fancy latte's.
This is a funny little space with lots of seating for the size. Great window spots with infinite people watching on Burnside. Parking into the south neighbourhood is still free but hard to find. They take the phone pay options and old-school cash of course.
I've eaten sweet treats here, they have a variety of locally baked goods, to go grain bars or bagels and/or sandwiches made to order with a full sheet of yes/no boxes to build your own. It's pretty magical really.
The baristas here are personable and will quickly become your favourite if you're a regular. Come for a quick coffee or tea or stay for a long study or relaxation sess to watch the world and...
