Not worth the money or hype. Living in Annapolis (home of the original Masons) and spending many summers on the coast of Maine, I had high hopes for this place. The menu concept is simple : lobster, crab, even clams and shrimp, in a roll with choice of sides. The lobster is fresh and in large chunks but a little too Spartan for my taste. My whole-lobster roll had half a tail and a few chunks. It's nice to see the tail intact, but difficult to eat. I would have preferred it cut into two or three pieces at least.
We tried both the Classic (chilled) and the Connecticut (warm with butter) and preferred the latter. It was a good sandwich, but not very filling. We each ordered the $21 pound and a quarter whole-lobster roll, making for a $50 lunch that left us still hungry. The sides of potato salad and Cole slaw were bland and nondescript. We did enjoy the Maine sodas however.
Service was also terribly slow. At the time we were there, there was only ONE other couple who had already finished eating. We waited 17 minutes to get our sandwiches. Other couples came in after us and had lengthy waits as well. Once the summer gets rolling, I don't know how these guys are going to keep up?
While there, we noticed that the other tables were much more frugal than we, couples only ordering one regular lobster roll and splitting it, or just having a cup of chowder. I think that indicates how expensive this place can be. I've had a bigger, better lobster roll from the Thunder Road food truck for only $15. If I want to spend $20 on a lobster roll I can get a huge one at Big Fish, in air conditioning and with table service. Table service with a smile that is, because the two guys behind the counter at Mason's clearly woke up on the wrong side of the bed the day we were there.
I'm glad there's another option for lobster rolls in Rehoboth, but people will have to dig deep into their pockets to help sustain this place. People coming off the beach for lunch or a quick dinner will be hard-pressed to pay $25 per person to eat... and...
Read moreOrdered takeout from here and this is what I recieved: I'm being critical due to the price being significantly more expensive than local sandwich/lunch chains.
Lobster roll tasted good; roll was buttered nicely....overall was underwhelming in my opinion from all the word-of-mouth hype surrounding it. The roll itself was very small in comparison to local businesses that charge 1/4 the price for a sandwich at double the size. The big difference being the lobster but at the suspected $15~ difference to cover a 5" sandwich worth of filling, it seems to fall a bit short to me in value personally.
The Mac and cheese was burned on the outside as the picture shows; the middle that was edible was decent though.
The fries were meh; seasoning was heavy on the top and none on the bottom; guessing I was supposed to shake the bag to even it out. Fries themselves were crunchy to where It seems like they were cooked a bit too long.
Would've given the place 4 stars if the Mac n cheese & fries were not overcooked to a crisp. I just figured for over 30 bucks it'd be...
Read moreOrdered on line to pick up today. The Bar Harbor Lobster Roll, Clam Chowder and French Fries. $41.00. Im from MA and know good lobster rolls and chowder. The chowder was very good but just a tad thin for my taste. Portion was small for an $8.00 cup. Lobster roll was disappointing. Lobster was luke warm and water logged. The tail was the same. Roll was ok but slightly burnt and distracted from the lobster. Fries were average fries. The three young girls working were stressed for sure scrambling to keep up. I looked in the back noticed the walk in door wide open but no one else there to support them. Worth the money? I dont think so I should have gone to Matt's Fish Camp. UPDATE:
my "replacement" chowder and Lobster Roll were both excellent. Perfectly thick chowder and grilled bun filled with chilled fresh lobster meat. A BIG improvement on my first...
