*Update 4/21/23: TRULY SAD TO HEAR OF ITS SALE AND FINAL TRANSFER DATE IN JUNE 2024!
I've been in this building when it was fully operational and it was absolutely beautiful in the now closed lounge. I hope Jacobs Entertainment makes the best out of it - by not changing a friggin thing AND KEEPING IT OPERATIONAL! [The way "J" (formerly The Sands) looks, I worry.]
It's the only Reno diner that's never failed me for the nearly 30 broken years I've lived here. One of their longest running and most popular competitors closed up during the height of the pandemic, allegedly forever (it's so Awful Awful that they're gone). Even before the virus, another downtown casino and dining competitor had already been closing down their dining by 11pm for the previous couple of years, unless there was a special event. As of today, I haven't even tried to eat there at night since then.
Save nothing but room in your stomach for the food anytime at GnS Inn. MASSIVE portions and mostly still hot even after a leisurely 5-6 block walk back to your room. It's not for the weak of stomach (or heart), but in a very tasty way. I've never met a meal there I didn't like and half the time, I leave with a leftovers box. They even have liver and onions on the menu but I'm not one to try. They do to-go orders for a small nominal fee but refuse to use any delivery apps (a good thing). At each table available to use, there is a QR code to download the GNS menu. Genius. Now, you can order whenever and just pick it up, ready to go. They made it happen during the C19 problem.
Great service, and I'm pretty sure the wait staff are asked to keep as close as possible to the authenticity from when the the GNS Inn first opened in the 1950s. (Update 4/21: not too sure about this part anymore)
It will forever be known to locals as the "Glob and Slobber", for its artery-clogging deliciousness and equine-sized portions. Losing this place to something bougie or just a bigger parking lot would be...
Read moreI always bring family here when they come to town. Never disappointed. Depending what you get, it can be a little pricey. But you get what you pay for. Rib eye steak and eggs is about $22, but it's a quality steak. You could maybe go somewhere and find a similar dish for $15. But it'll probably be a thinner cut of steak. I had the country breakfast with pancakes ($13) and my brother in law had his with french toast. Good size portions, not absurdly large, but by no means small. He ended up taking half his home. 3 of us with coffee and tip=$50. Maybe a little pricey, but the quality is definitely there. No corners cut here.
If you ever went to an Olive garden and afterwards thought... "Hey that was pretty good, we should come back here again sometime"... Then I suggest you get your order from Gold 'N Silver to go... So you won't get brains all over my Chicken Fried Steak'n eggs when your mind is blown.
The staff is friendly and pleasant enough that grandpa, for once, will shut up about how things were better in his day. We've never waited more than about 15 minutes or so, no matter how busy the were. If you look forward to waiting until your done eating before the waitress brings you ketchup, syrup, extra anything, or to refill your coffee.. this ain't the place for you. Definitely recommend.
Let me put it like this, whenever friends or family come to Reno, this is where I take them for breakfast. And every single one afterwards, makes it a tradition to go here every time they are in Reno. Even if they are just passing through Reno. They will leave an hour earlier or later depending on when Gold 'N Silver...
Read more1 bite in, that's all it took to confirm a long held belief. That when in the comfort food market. One can not do better than long established, Mom and Pop restaurants! From an earlier post, I declared my hankering for a good Lasagna. And while the portion I was treated to pretty much scratched the itch, I decided to follow up with a restaurant featured on DDD, Guy Fiari's Food Network instalment. The only reason this rating is not higher. Gold and Silver Inn fell short on atmosphere, and their order to go practice needs a more subtle makeover. First the Lasagna, creamy ricotta, a spicy sausage, a thick topping of mozzarella, NAILED IT! Two generous sides of garlic bread... Perfect! Based on the food alone, this easily cleared the five star standard!!! Three steamy bites into this evaluation "To Go Order" blared over the speaker system about 10 times the volume of the oldies that had made a nice touch background. To say this was jarring, well that would be an understatement. Unfortunately, three other to go order's occured during the balance of my stay, each as disruptive as the first. Approximately halfway through my Lasagna pallozza, an older gentleman began loudlydressing down the staff about punching time clocks, and section assignment. Did I need to be part of this housekeeping? I hope the good folks of the Gold and Silver Inn read this, and make the appropriate adjustments. I am eager to explore the menu further, without being "To...
