My wife came across one of their take-out menus at her work, so we decided to give them a shot. We ordered one of their small thin-crust pizzas with Italian sausage, their penne with vodka sauce, and an order of meat ravioli with Italian sausage in marinara sauce.
The pizza was very good. The sauce is definitely on the sweet side, comparable to Aurelio's, but not cloying. The sausage, a combination of medium-size chunks and ground sausage, had good flavor, and they didn't skimp on the cheese. All in all, a pretty good pie.
We were a little nervous to try the penne with vodka sauce. The last decent vodka sauce we'd had was at Polito's in South Bend, IN, so when we saw it on the menu we had to try it. It definitely didn't disappoint. Plenty of flavor, and it clung to the pasta nicely. It wasn't as thick or spicy as Polito's, but it had plenty of flavor. Very good.
The ravioli with Italian sausage in marinara was excellent. The sauce reminded me of the pasta sauce my wife and I make, with plenty of garlic, basil, oregano, and chunks of tomato. The ravioli were cooked perfectly, and the Italian sausage put the dish over the top for myself.
The included bread was a nice compliment to both pasta dishes, and the portion sizes were gigantic. My wife, son, and I all have plenty of leftovers, which is definitely not a bad thing. My only gripe is that they don't have a lasagna on their menu other than for catering, but there's still plenty of other choices on their menu, so it's just a small gripe. We'll...
Read moreI recently placed an order with Palermo’s in Merrillville for my daughter’s Sweet 16, and while the food itself was delicious, I was very disappointed with the overall experience. Before ordering, I researched pricing for mostaccioli and chicken on their website. However, when I called to place the order, I was told the prices were significantly higher than what was listed online.
The woman I spoke with on the phone was very nice and understanding of my concerns. A few days later, I received a call from one of the owners, Paul, who explained that the prices online were outdated and that they don’t update their website frequently due to constant changes in food costs and the cost to update their website. While I understand that prices can fluctuate, I still find it very unprofessional for a business not to honor the prices they advertise online. It felt like false advertisement to me.
Palermo’s has been around for a long time, so I expected better transparency and customer service in this regard. My advice to anyone ordering catering would be to call directly for pricing rather than relying on their website, as they will not honor what price is...
Read moreThis was difficult since I haven't had Palermo's in 20 yrs. We ordered for pickup and customer service was excellent 5 ⭐. I'll start with our pizza, Sausage & Pepperoni. The quality of the cheese, sausage & pepperoni was excellent 5 ⭐. The sauce was extremely bland with plain tomato taste 2 ⭐. We ordered Jalapeno Poppers and Garlic Cheese Bread for side. The 6 pc poppers were small and mediocre at best, 2 ⭐. The Garlic cheese bread was bland with no seasonings, so it was toasted bread with great cheese, 2 ⭐. While I was picking up my order the owner was walking around and speaking to the customers. They spoke highly of their pasta dishes and food that was not pizza, so maybe Palermo's is better know for other food?! Owner speaking to customer is an excellent quality in a restaurant, 5 ⭐. I do not recommend the garlic cheese bread or poppers, but I will give them another opportunity to see if the bland sauce was a fluke or try...
