My first experience with Lamppost was incredible! So much so, I’ve gone out of my way to make many more and on many occasions since. I’ve been to the New Braunfels location, both round Rock locations, the San Marcos location, the Georgetown location, and I’m eagerly anticipating the opening of their new location on 183. I live outside of Austin, so anytime I want lamppost, it’s a long drive, and doesn’t happen as frequently as I’d like, but I do what I can to make it happen as often as possible.
For the most part, I’ve had relatively positive experiences, but this last one was enough to nearly change my opinion about them entirely. I was arriving to round rock location around 6:45, and in an effort to be courteous, I placed an online order so that I wouldn’t arrive at 6:45 and then order 4 drinks when they were so close to closing. In doing this, I asked that the 2 hot drinks that I ordered be prepared extra hot (an option that is asked about when ordering) and I got two cold drinks without ice (also an option) so they wouldn’t be watered down or room temperature by the time that I arrived. Sounds good right? No.
My hot drinks, as expected were still enjoyable and warm when I arrived. My cold drinks however, were literally half full, apparently because I got them without ice. This is an illogical tactic used by greedy businesses that think that a few people asking for the full 16 oz they paid for is somehow going to bankrupt them in comparison to how much they are making off of the others. This is unacceptable both because it was unnecessary, and also because I paid almost $1 extra each drink for oatmilk. I paid a service fee to order the items online instead of in the store, and I tipped, which I now regret.
I understand that complaining about overpriced coffee is a first world non issue and I’m not making it into a huge deal, but it’s not unreasonable or irrational to ask that I not receive quite literally a half empty cup because I ordered a drink...
Read moreI used to come here constantly when it was Star coffee, it was fantastic and I loved it, they had amazing vibes and it was home-y and warm and amazing, lots of selection and there was so much to do, and look at, such as their bookshelves of boardgames, and quirky community notebooks that people could draw/write in whatever they wanted, a highlight of my experience going there was definitely flipping through the well-worn pages and getting a peek into other people's lives, that's what it was like going to Star, intimate, fun, and interesting. Now that it's Lampost I have never been more disappointed, it's bleak and sterile, the vibes there are now hostile and boring, it's as if they went on one trip to Kohls for decor and only used Kohls cash to buy everything. The walls are 70 shades of monotone grey, and there's absolutely no life at all. They have about 7 syrups, whereas Star coffee had so many options and variety when it came to everything. The entire shop seems like a hospital waiting room, I was utterly disappointed when I first walked in, I would spend my own time and money decorating the place for the sake of the atmosphere that they've destroyed. I'm glad that the owner of Star retired for himself, but I'm so sad that this is what has become to a place that was once an absolute GEM of a coffee shop, might I say a landmark of Round Rock. Now it's as if some California coffee shop came to Austin and failed, and then migrated to Round Rock to suck away at the locals happiness. Their lattes are ok, but if you want a local coffee shop experience, go to Cafe Java instead.
EDIT: They're definitely trying, all of the employees are godsends and fantastic, the coffee is basic but good/cheap, the owner is awful enough to cause a walk out of employees but besides that, they're definitely a coffeeshop in the...
Read moreI’ve been going to this café for literally years. I always purchase something today I didn’t today. I got a glass of water and an ice cream cone at the near by ice cream shop to cool off on a hot day. I’m a very quiet reserved person. I’ve never once had a complaint about my conduct and I never talk to the baristas. Today I did talk to one barista she’s a bit taller and has curly blonde hair. I had an ice cream cone in my hand and I think I might’ve said something like “it’s a very hot day today.” I think she must’ve thought I said something else cause she was like “huh” and then I repeated myself. I then sat down and quietly ate my ice cream and sulked for a bit. I had just gotten off of a very stressful day of work and I always go to lamppost just to wind down or even study. I had my head down on the table because I was feeling very sad but then I saw that the counter at the front was metal and thought I might feel very nice to rest my face on cool metal of the counter. Well I walked up to the counter and then a different girl and she told me that I made the other barista uncomfortable and she was kicking me out. Honestly I feel very bad. It was never my intention to make anyone uncomfortable but I am also feeling very bitter since I wasn’t given a reason as to why I was kicked out. I’ve been a regular at that cafe for years and I’ve never once had a conversation with one of the baristas. You made me feel like a weird freak that can’t even have small talk without being kicked out of one of my favorite places to hang out. I want to come back since it’s one of my favorite places in round rock. I really like the small town vibe. But idk if I’m just kicked out or banned. This happened at around 17:30 on the 25 of June. Check the cameras or whatever...
