Weekend Notes: Round Rock Downtown

Weekend Notes: Round Rock Downtown

I have been coming to this location for YEARS. I've ordered a cake before and get donuts regularly. Never in my twenty years of giving this company my loyal business have I been treated like I was today. I pre-ordered a Halloween donut cake for my daughter's preschool class, scheduled pickup at 9:00am. I tried calling yesterday to ask if I could pick up early, closer to 8:30am. I couldn't get past their recording and hold music. I got there a little bit before 8:30, and there was a pretty good wait to get to the walk up window (drive thru was worse). I told the person at the window why I was there and offered my order confirmation. She said she didn't need it and put my last name and what I ordered. I waited and waited with no updates for so long that the other window asked if I'd even placed an order yet. Then someone brings out two boxes of cupcakes and I had to tell them that wasn't my order. Then the second window person comes back and says it won't be ready until 9am because that's when I scheduled pickup. I tried explaining what I did above, and she said well it's scheduled for 9, so just come back then and shut the window in my face. My whole issue with this experience is that I was left standing in 40 degree weather and wind when I was never told that it just wasn't ready yet when I went to pick up the order. The entire ordeal could have been avoided if they had just bothered to produce a modicum of customer service. So, I went back to my car and called in hoping to actually reach someone today. I asked for the general manager and was told they don't have a general manager, they just have a few managers and I was speaking to one (older white lady with shoulder length grey hair). She was never very friendly and when I was explaining the situation to her she immediately became defensive and kept talking over me, which just added to my aggravation because I couldn't get a word in without talking over her talking over me. I explained that I was in a pretty bad car accident a few days ago and the only reason I did not cancel is because my daughter and her class were so excited about it, and they wouldn't understand. I explained how the cold weather was making my pain worse, and it wouldn't have been a problem had I not been left in the cold waiting with no updates for around 20 minutes. She told me today (Halloween) is a "major holiday" and they were busy. She didn't care. She finally said it would be right out and I just hung up. She was out in less than 5 minutes (about 7 minutes from when I left the window). I told her at the car to have the day she deserved and she told me (and I quote) "look, I'm glad you're so perfect you've never made a mistake", which was completely unprofessional and rude. That told me a couple things--one the cake was probably ready and they were just making me wait until the scheduled time, and two that she's a rude person. So, I told her exactly what I thought and it wasn't very nice. Needless to say, I will never return to Round Rock Donuts as long as I live. I have never encountered someone so unprofessional, ungracious, and downright spiteful. Attaching a photo of the donut cake, which was not customized other than their standard Halloween design, so I know it was ready and they were just being petty.

So I can only speak on the Giant Texas Donut (glazed version) before I get to that I will say their other donuts looked great, the cinnamon rolls were huge, and kolaches were big as well, but as I mentioned I only tried the TX Giant Donut, which was probably the equivalent of having 8 donuts. It’s a fair price, 11.89 each that comes in three options, regular glazed, chocolate glazed, or 50/50. The breading used was not like your standard dough used for donuts. Its was more like a potato bread or kolache breading but it was good fried in donut form. It wasn’t overly sweet, and to be honest I felt like I could have eaten the entire thing. There was a long line. They offer a drive through and that line was just as long. They have a huge parking lot across the street. We parked there and walked over and stood in line. Let me tell you how it works just so you can feel like a regular. They will form two lines one on each end of the front of the building. You will place your order at the window, pay, provide a name for the order, you will then head over to the side of the building. You will see others gathered off to the side. Just patiently wait and a food runner will walk out periodically and call out name for the orders placed. We waiting in line about 15 min and it took about 5 minutes for our order to come out. Very similar to how Starbucks works to say it beat. PRO TIP: When you provide your name, I would use a name that’s not as common. This will ensure you don’t have about three people walking up when the name John or Jane is called out. We used our son’s not so common name, and I’m glad we did because I heard my name called while we were waiting. I’m sure it’s not a huge deal, but if you’re an introvert this would avoid any unwanted interactions. Lol

As a repeat out-of-town customer, I can confidently say that Round Rock Donuts lives up to its Texas reputation – everything truly is bigger, and better, here! This isn't just a donut shop; it's an institution that consistently delivers on taste, quality, and a touch of that famous Texas charm. The undisputed star of the show is the legendary Texas Donut. Its sheer size is impressive, but it's the perfect balance of fluffy interior and subtly crisp exterior that makes it a must-try. You can't go wrong with any selection from their extensive menu, a testament to their mastery of the craft. My local friend, a true connoisseur, always opts for a dozen glazed and a dozen chocolate glazed for her household – and for good reason. The classic glazed offers a melt-in-your-mouth sweetness, while the chocolate glazed provides a rich, satisfying counterpoint. On my latest visit, we opted for a mixed dozen, and we were absolutely delighted with every single bite. From the classic cake donuts to their more adventurous options, each one was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly crafted. Beyond the donuts, Round Rock offers other gems that are just as impressive. The seasonal frozen berry lemonade is a refreshing revelation. It's perfectly balanced, offering a tart kick from the berries without being overly sweet – a welcome antidote to the Texas heat. And do NOT skip the kolaches! These savory delights are a fantastic complement to the sweet pastries and are equally well-made. Whether you're a local or just passing through, Round Rock Donuts is a culinary destination that should be on your radar. The consistent quality, friendly service, and a menu that truly offers something for everyone make it a highly recommended stop for any pastry lover. It’s more than just a donut; it’s a truly...
