H. Salt Esq is one of those last remaining remnants of my childhood that could very well be here today and gone tomorrow. It is for that reason I try to go here when I can, despite not being a huge fan of fried foods in my older age. The decor is dated and from a bygone era, heck, they even have a 13inch tube TV attached to the wall, but that is part of the charm. The taste of the food also gives you an insight of a far gone time. It remains pretty much as it used to be from what I remember from the late 1970s and 1980s. How many times have you eaten a food from your youth only to discover it has been tweaked for the worse due to modern times? How disappointing is that? I ordered the seafood combo which comes with a large piece of fish, 2 large shrimps, clam pieces, scallops, French fries, and onion rings. ($13.99) Each type of seafood has its own specific batter. Everything is made to order to you need to expect to wait about 10-15 minutes for your food. Did I mind? No way, there is something refreshing to have your fast food made to order which makes it worthwhile. Too many fast food places now seem to prioritize speed over the actual quality of the food. This outlet is one of the few remaining H. Salt Esq outlets and is run by a super sweet hard working elderly Asian couple. Don't make yourself regret not having a trip down memory lane by waiting too long before this one closes and becomes a mega...
Read moreI used to come here when I was a teenager 50 years ago. Back then, the 60s British mod was all the rage, and H Salt Fish and Chips was a big part of it. They were from England! The food used to be delicious, so I decided to try it again and and I'm pleased to say that 50 years later, H Salt fish-and-chips is still. The number one fish-and-chips in Sacramento. They serve big chunks of cod in a light tempora-like batter that's never greasy. I always ordered the side order of mushrooms. (Each order comes with French fries.) My mushrooms were cooked just the way they were 50 years ago. Light on the batter. Crispy cooked but not overcooked, just perfec. And the French fries are the big, thick ones, not the frozen crinkle fries yuck. When you go in there, look for the pictures on the wall of that original fish factory in England. You can barely make out the pictures now because they're so old. This place is truly a...
Read moreI got the regular three-piece fish and chips combo--I think it's cod--and a piece of catfish to try. The fish was flakey, crispy, lightly battered, and perfectly seasoned. I really like how they ask you if you want salt on it. Some places don't season it at all. I like the catfish a little bit more. It had more of a bite. The only downside is it's a tad too greasy for me. You can see the grease fall off the fish. The best fish and chips I ever had is really light and it doesn't make you feel like shit. But, at the same time, it was really flavorful and worth the price. It's only about $10 for 3 pieces. That's a cheap meal that can feed 2 people.
The fries tasted like normal, consistent frozen fries. I also got onion rings to try. It had light and crispy batter. You can really taste the onion, it's not frozen. I always get coleslaw at fish & chips spots to cut the greasiness and it's...
