Friendly owner, underwhelming food experience unfortunately.

My wife and I are on an adventure to try as many sushi places near Sacramento and decided to try Kumi Sushi after seeing strong reviews online. The owner was very kind and welcoming, but the service felt disorganized. Our server seemed lost—we had to repeat our order several times, and even then, mistakes happened. An otoro we never ordered appeared on the bill (removed once we pointed it out), and our A5 wagyu didn’t arrive until we asked about it.

On to the food:

The rice in the nigiri was cold, which really took away from the overall experience. Maybe because we arrived an hour and half before they were going to close?

The chutoro didn’t look or taste very fresh, though I did notice they tried adding a truffle twist on top.

The saba was $12, which felt overpriced given it’s usually one of the cheaper fish, and the quality didn’t match the cost.

The sake and hamachi were decent.

The biggest disappointment was the A5 wagyu nigiri. At about $22 for two pieces, it came out as very thin slices, with roughly 30% of each piece just visible fat, almost like pork belly. Instead of the buttery, melt-in-your-mouth wagyu experience, it was chewy and uneven.

Overall, while the staff were friendly, the service issues and the quality of some dishes—especially the wagyu—left us underwhelmed. We had high hopes going into...

My recent visit to this sushi spot was an absolute disaster, and I feel compelled to warn others about the horror show that unfolded. From the moment we walked in, it was evident that chaos reigned supreme. The waitstaff seemed overwhelmed and understaffed, leaving customers languishing for attention.

After what felt like an eternity, our food finally arrived, but it was far from appetizing. The sushi looked limp and lifeless, as if it had been sitting out for ages. The taste confirmed our suspicions – it was bland and borderline inedible. It was clear that freshness and quality were mere afterthoughts in this establishment.

To make matters worse, when we attempted to voice our concerns to the owner, Daisy, we were met with hostility and indifference. Instead of addressing our legitimate grievances, she brushed us off and made it clear that customer satisfaction was not a priority.

In summary, save yourself the headache and skip this sushi nightmare. Daisy's disregard for quality and customer service is appalling, and I refuse to subject myself to such a dismal dining...

Ran in for a quick takeaway order. I'm impressed bc the food is tasty, the staff is polite, the dining room is cute, and the business is environmentally friendly.

Food: $8 for 2 pc sake (salmon) nigiri. Fish portion is huge and fresh. Sushi rice is prepared and seasoned well. $13 for chicken karaage. Super crunchy, marinated thigh pieces served with lemon and spicy mayo. Also a good portion.

Packaging: My to-go order was packaged in all recyclable or biodegradable materials! This is something I dont always see here in Sacramento. Staff also asked what supplies I might need (chopsticks, wasabi, soy sauce) to cut down on waste. Really appreciate these conscientious business practices.

Ambience: There is bar seating by the sushi chef. More bar further away. Tables are spacious and comfy looking. TVs showing sports games when I went in. I'll definitely be back for dining in to have a beer and dinner!...

Nov 2024 update- I came again to try to the nigiri. And it's amazing. I got the salmon, tuna, and unagi. Each one was amazing. Salmon was solid, Unagi great as well, but the tuna blew me away. It was perfect. So I am giving Kumi a revised 5 star. Their unagi-don apparently is great as well, but if you want good quality sushi- this is the place. Make sure to eat in store, as the to-go may not be as good. Enjoy! Sep 2024- I got a salmon nigiri and the 5-piece chef special to-go. It was pretty solid, especially the nigiri. I would have to eat-in to give a more thorough review. But it was a nice, clean atmosphere. They just opened up earlier this year (2024) and it can seat 20+ easily if you have a big work lunch. Just call ahead. Chef and the waitress are very nice and friendly. I will have to try their rolls, but the sashimi was acceptable and presentation was good for a to-go meal.
