Salt Lake is lucky to have a Chinese restaurant of the quality of Hong King Tea House. We've gone there for years on our yearly trips to do research at the Family History library. The dim sum is the big draw.
People who don't appreciate how good the food is will sometimes kvetch about the neighborhood, which has a larger share of homeless folks than most other parts of the city. Several groups working with the homeless offer free meals and other assistance to those in need on the same street as the restaurant, and this is why you may see a homeless person occasionally if you go to Hong Kong Tea House. We have never once felt unsafe even when we walk from our timeshare near Temple Square to the restaurant.
It's worth the long walk. Sticky rice steamed in lotus leaves, turnip cakes, shrimp and chives dumplings, scallop dumplings with garlic flavor, har gow and shiu mai, snow pea leaves dumplings, Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, eggplant and bell pepper stuffed with shrimp paste, stuffed bean curd: Hong Kong Tea House has it all, and it's all delicious. If you like dipping sauce, be sure to ask for soy sauce and chili oil before your order comes to the table.
This is not a place where dim sum carts come around. You order by the plate and your dish is made to order. That means that it can take some time for the food to arrive, and on busy days, service can appear nonchalant and slow.
It's worth the wait, and if you watch the wait staff, most of whom look related to each other, so this appears to be a family business, they work very hard to take orders, seat people, take people's payment, and bring food to tables. If you appreciate excellent dim sum of the quality you can usually find only in places like San Francisco, I highly recommend Hong Kong Tea House. You won't be...
Read moreFOR YOUR HEALTH, PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO SO YOU DON'T GET SICK TOO. (If you have a weak stomach I'd stop reading right at the block of CAPS text!!) I'm firmly convinced that the vast majority of these positive reviews are totally fake. I've been wanting to try Dim Sum for years and was REALLY excited for a little mid-week takeout lunch date with my partner. We spent almost $50 with tip and most of our order was wrong. That's fine, I've worked in restaurants and I understand people have busy / stressed days. No big deal. BUT THEN I GOT FOOD POISONING. YOU READ RIGHT, FOOD POISONING FROM THAT BOOF FOOD!! I lost 7 pounds in a little over a day from throwing up LITERAL POUNDS of bile and water that I couldn't keep down. Also had horrible stomach cramps accompanied by diarrhea!! I was so sick and weak that I just had a big Tupperware bucket in front of the couch with a towel under it because I just couldn't make it to the toilet. I drank almost TWO FULL LG TANKS of Brita water and that's legit the only reason I wasn't in the ER that night. My partner was close to making an executive decision and taking me anyways. It was an absolutely miserable time. I threw up 26-30 times, we slightly lost count.
So I'm 100000% sure it was from HERE as we eat a Paleo diet (never had any issues with chicken and lettuce LMAO) and had not ordered from any other establishments this week ..... If I could give a...
Read moreMy first time in this place was a good experience. I met a friend here and talked some business. The staff was very patient with the time that we were in the restaurant. We were there around 4:00 so we just ordered a couple of appetizers and some tea. They recommended their special house tea. I think that was a good suggestion the tea was nice. I had hope to try the dim sum but we were too late. I did not know that dim sum is available only until 3:00. So my wife and I went on Saturday and specifically for the intent to eat dim sum. I had spent some time in the past in Hong Kong, the dim sum here is just like I remember from Hong Kong. I would highly recommend going before 3:00 and getting dim sum from this place. They are not open on Monday so know that up front. I would also recommend getting the house special tea to go with your dim sum. When I was there with my friend he had the chow mein and he really liked it I tasted it as well and it was good. I ordered salted fish and chicken fried rice it was nice as well. If you don't know what salted fish is, you might want to stay away or have someone explain to you what this is. It is an unusual taste. But I like it and I would recommend it to those who have a familiarity with salted fish. My wife and I are already talking about going back and trying more of the dim sum menu. Overall a great experience. The rest rooms were clean as was the...
