I had the displeasure of living here and being subjected to the disappointing and apathetic management, but apparently my lease and residence was so short and uninteresting that the management that monitors online reviews has decided that I didn't actually live in this dystopia of an apartment complex.
I can't, in good conscience, recommend Alta Gateway Station in any way, shape, or form. Please read all the reviews present on all ways of reviewing apartment complexes before making your decision to live here.
I feel as if I do have to say something positive in my review, so here it goes: the amenities are nice, if they aren't trashed by other residents, broken, or your key fob even lets you in. For an apartment complex to work in the location that Alta Gateway Station is in (in downtown, directly across from the homeless services, right next to vacant empty lots, with a nearby trax station, and heavy foot and vehicle traffic), there needs to be a focus on security. Sadly there isn't. Persons not residents, their guests, or staff of the complex have gotten in on many occasions. Be it from walking in through the unlocked front door, hopping the fence to break in, a door being broken, a door being propped open, or following someone in through the badged doors parking garage.
The door to one part of the complex, where we happened to live, was inoperational, mostly broken but semi operational, or completely unlocked for anyone to come in for most of the duration of our residing at Alta Gateway Station. The security "team" was unreachable for the entirety of our living at Alta Gateway Station. Be it because the complex fired the last security company but left the number when you called the Alta Gateway Station number, or when there was not an alternative security number, or when after we received the security number... the number was disconnected. The management, security, or any competent person at Alta Gateway Station was all but completely unreachable or very unwilling to do anything at all. The office package room was self-serve, so it was completely open to anyone, any I'm amazed I ever got anything I ordered in my hands. When we had a gathering of a few residents, we tried to describe how awful the management and front office was and we (a group of 10+ adults) came up with one word - apathetic. Apathetic is an adjective meaning "showing or feeling no interest, enthusiasm, or concern".
One of the worst things that happened was an outbreak of parvovirus in the complex. What made it worse was how the apartment complex management dealt with it. Many dogs got horrifically ill, a few of them ended up dying, and this all could have been prevented if the complex made sure all incoming dogs were completely vaccinated with vet records AND they did a better job at cleaning the common areas. In their defence, they bleached the dog area once, but that was not enough, as parvovirus can live on surfaces for years. It was up to the residents - while trying to figure out what to do to keep their beloved pets alive - to follow around everywhere they and their dogs went with bleach in a spray bottle. Trying to figure out what to do to keep my own dog safe while simultaneously worrying about all the dogs she had gotten to know was a very depressing two months. It got to the point where we didn't even use the dog park and walking areas in the complex property, opening ourselves up to harassment from people outside on the public street when we had to do late night or early morning dog outings. This is not what we signed up for moving downtown to a "safe" apartment. Then, even though there are leash laws in the city AND complex, there were off-leash dogs throughout and around the complex, free to attack my dog and other dogs, pottying all over the complex carpet and rugs, while the staff didn't care and said they wouldn't do anything. I think I may have had the only dog that had not pottied inside the building... And my dog is 12.
We did not receive the safe or luxury accommodations that we were promised and are incredibly...
Read moreI have lived here over a year now. I have loved it. I might update my review with more pictures but for now, please accept my words.
I live in a wonderful building with great staff who are helpful, courteous and kind. Kyler and Jamal at the front have always been so attentive and sincere. When we first moved in, the maintenance team wasn't what it is now and our apartment was a disaster. When Kyler learned of what was wrong, she told me that she would make it right and make it up to us. I had come from another complex that would promise you things but never follow through. So I smiled and nodded but expected we would need to fix things ourselves. To my surprise and delight, she arranged for maintenance to show up and fix many, many things. In addition, she gave us a gift card as her way of saying sorry for what happened and how it was not in keeping with the standards of the complex. Jamal has for many, many months and has been a consistent mainstay at the front. Jamal is a great guy. He is always to the point, considerate, sincere, involved and professional. I have especially enjoyed how I can ask him any question and he will have the answer that I need. He won't give me corporate double speak, he won't comfort me with a lie, he will give me the answer I need with whatever situation I have faced. Plus, he knows my name and always greets me. They all know my name. I really appreciate that.
I would be remiss in this review if I did not mention the maintenance team. Alex and Eric are awesome. Apartment living can be a mixed bag. Construction standards feel like they are slipping as everyone wants to make a quick buck. Alex is head maintenance and he is always trying to help us how he can. The man has what feels like limitless energy. I admire his work ethic and how he has helped us in a lot of different ways. We had this issue with one of the pipes in our ceiling making an odd knocking noise. He tried about eight different ways of trying to diagnose and fix the problem. In the process, he found at least one other major problem and was able to catch that before it got worse. All with a smile and without a complaint. Eric is the appliance master. He knows the ins and outs of all our appliances and how to troubleshoot and fix them. We had an issue with our dishwasher not cleaning or draining properly. He showed up, prepared with a special cleaner, plopped it in the dishwasher, started it on a heavy load and left. It was like 2 minutes. Worked incredibly! Both also are always professional, kind and always greet me in the halls.
When it was time to renew, they gave us an early bird special of keeping our current rent with no increase. Who does that? No one I know in the area. I was so impressed and it has been a delight living here.
I am a really tall guy (6'8") and I love the tall ceilings. I enjoy how I live in a place where people actually care. They care if you have mold, they care if there's an issue. They also learn your name and make you feel welcome. They take pride in their work. If you are looking for a place to live, take a tour here. They keep everything clean to the best of their ability, they are diligent and consistent.
This review is long enough but just so you know, the pool area and the other amenities are really nice. Another shout out to maintenance (and cleaners Gustavo and Carmen) for their tireless work keeping everything clean and...
Read moreI’ll start with the positives. The apartment complex is relatively new, and our unit was clean and undamaged when we moved in. The pool and hot tub are nice, although they were sometimes closed. The gym is also very nice and well-maintained. When something in the apartment broke, maintenance requests were handled quickly and professionally. The maintenance team was friendly, efficient, and easy to work with.
Unfortunately, there were several significant downsides, mostly related to management and security:
Management Issues: The management team was largely unresponsive. Emails frequently went unanswered, and phone calls were rarely returned. On several occasions as I walked by the front office I'd watch staff ignore phone calls even when they were alone. I always had to follow up in person to get any attention. When leaving, they required written confirmation of my move-out date. Despite sending it multiple times, I was still charged a fee due to poor organization. After following up three times, it was removed. Staff behavior was inconsistent. Some employees were kind and helpful, while others were dismissive, abrasive, or even rude. When I moved out, a large cleaning fee was taken from our deposit. When I asked how clean the apartment needed to be to avoid the fee, I was told not to clean because they charge everyone regardless. My deposit refund has been significantly reduced, and nearly two months later, I still haven’t received it.
Security Concerns: The parking garage gates and doors were often broken, allowing strangers to enter. Trash was frequently left in the garage. The mail room is not secure despite what they say; tenants often left the door open, packages were regularly stolen, and old packages were never cleared out. Some deliveries were left outside rather than in lockers. I'd ship packages to my work instead for safety. The after-hours garage lockout number goes to a call center that cannot provide immediate assistance. The Straits app for building access often didn’t work, requiring the use of a physical fob instead.
Other Issues: Several hidden fees appeared over time, such as duplicate renter’s insurance charges, with little or no notification. Rent increased significantly when we re-signed our contract despite prices for our same apartment being ~$300 less online. The online rental portal occasionally malfunctioned. The front community area wasn’t usable because the lights didn’t work at night. It could only be used during the day. Occasionally, there were homeless individuals around the complex, including sleeping on the bottom floors porches, though Gateway security generally helped. I'd recommend not living on the first floor.
Overall, while the apartments themselves and the maintenance team are good, the primary concern is management. The current team seems disengaged and disorganized, with poor communication. This doesn't mean they're not good people, but we struggled with them. Better systems and organization are needed, and a return to the previous management company would likely improve the living experience significantly. I also recommend Greystar as an alternative that I've had a good...
