Definitely not by the bay haha I was expecting a bay side restaurant, butttt doesn’t matter bc the food was amazing and authentic. Food was fresh, came out quick and their market was very well stocked with a variety of Brazilian items. Employees were very friendly. Very casual and authentic environment. 10/10 would return again loved my experience.
Edit: returned for a second time on 01/14 and had a terrible experience. I asked the server if I could place my order after waiting for 15 minutes. We were not offered menus or water. She told me she had to serve other tables and could not take our order. We asked to order twice and were denied both times. She mentioned that there was an order she had to go in, but I was confused. The other times I came there wasn’t an order it was just a normal sit down restaurant? I wasn’t informed of this order structure so I’m not sure how I was expected to know my place in order? I am totally understanding and sympathetic towards staffing shortages but being treated with respect and having my order taken is a minimum level of service, that I saw other tables receive. I feel like we were not served because we look young. She told us to leave the restaurant and contact the manager if we were not happy. I didn’t want to cause any problems, or complain, I just wanted to order. I was just confused about this new order system, and I was met with disrespect and an invitation to leave the restaurant. After this I wasn’t willing to eat here - despite the food being amazing. I wish we were treated equally and like the other tables were. I called the number she gave me for the manager and didn’t hear back yet, I also texted. I am awaiting a response from the manager.
The food is great here, but I just can’t overlooking being treated so poorly - I have never experienced...
Read moreWhat a seriously cool little place tucked away in San Diego!
I have a friend online from Santa Catarina, a state in southern Brazil, that wanted me to try some Coxinhas. The more I get to know my friend the more fascinated I am by Brazilian culture. Southern California has a lot of Hispanic culture here but you don't see too much Brazilian culture here. But what do you know I stumbled across this place while looking for a place to try Coxinhas, a popular Brazilian street food, and I found this place and wanted to try it out!
The people inside were super friendly and hospitable! The food I tried was very tasty, and it was cool seeing other Brazilians going in and getting food too. After eating I went to the import shop attached to the cafe and bought a few things from 'em to try out. The gentleman running the shop was very friendly and recommended me some very good things to try! The Pilao coffee is def worth a buy and I def notice the caffeine from it when I drink it, which I don't notice from typical prepackaged coffees you usually find at the grocery store.
I hope I can visit Brazil one day, but at least we have a place like this here to get a little taste of Brazil here in Southern California!
My Brazilian friend had a message to the people here at the shop, and it's in Portuguese so I will copy/paste it here! "Estou feliz em saber que meu amigo encontrou este local, eu fico falando para ele provar uma coxinha toda hora e finalmente ele encontrou um bom restaurante. Parabéns pelo sucesso e desejo a todos vocês um ótimo dia, obrigado por receber meu amigo e pela recepção que todo brasileiro se orgulha, um grande abraço e sucesso ah...
Read moreSome friends were back in town from school and war and wanted to find a late night meal. We had a coupon to Brazil by the Bay and they had great reviews so we decided to check it out. This place is located in sort of an industrial area and pretty tough to find in the dark but it was the only shop with any light on so it stuck out just across the street from the Sports Arena.
I ordered the tri-tip with the Brazilian cheese sauce. For about $15, you sure didn't get a whole lot of food or value. There were just a few slices of the chewy tri-tip and a little rice, all of it swimming in the cheese sauce. The tri-tip seemed a bit overcooked for my taste and I was unimpressed by the overall lack of value.
The staff was really nice and it seems like a cool family joint, but the meh food coupled with the high price and terrible location really didn't do much for me. They have a little patio outside where you can dine with your dog, but I'm not sure I really want to stare at the dingy Sports Center while I eat. The prices are pretty close to those of Rei do Gado's lunch special and it's absolutely no contest between which I would choose. Sorry Brazil by the Bay, even with the promos, I don't think I will be back.
