Approaching with an open mind and no expectations, booked a reservation for 6p on a Wednesday with the boys for a pre-birthday celly. Booked online, they have a $10/head rezzy hold but that's standard procedure these days (Refunded after)!
Right next to grass skirt - immediately when you walk in you can feel the Captain's Quarter vibes. Love the visual screens in the portholes that add a 'in the ocean' fun energy.
Our server, Shantel was literally 12/10 (we spent time talking about how to properly spell her name so if I got it wrong please correct me). I arrived early and was still able to be seated while my friends got there. Shantel was super patient, walked me thru the menu & recommended some awesome gin drinks (I'm a sweets, tequila, mezcal guy). Had a Captain's Orders & Son of A Gun - both solid drinks that led me finally to a Dirty Martini lolz.
Food was delicious and super quality, similar to high quality at Grass Skirt. We had the Halloumi Fries, Grilled Prawns, and Mussels - and Shantel did a solid job of setting expectations on the mussels not being in a broth. Also had the caviar bumps lol - fun - Sturgeon! Also b/c our table is always elite w/ positive vibes not to brag - but we got to try a lil special special item that was great.
To speak to the service - my martini I ordered hadn't come out as quickly as our other drinks (which we hadn't noticed or minded, Shantel proactively went and got it immediately fixed and comp'd the drink.
At this point the place was basically capacity packed and she still found time to regularly check on us and had just positive, legend energy. If she ain't the lead server then get her there, yesterday!!!
The only thing that was tricky was that there was only 1 bathroom stall, which, I understand for a smaller speakeasy space, but just to be prepared for!
Definitely a vibe and will be bringing friends here in the...
Read moreVery fun and quite delicious! We arrived just a touch before opening, and got a bit lost (I'd been to grass skirt years ago and forgot how to enter 😅). Big thank you to the kind staff who saw our confusion and helped us out!
The Landlubber tonic was very refreshing, and the Hi-Sea tonic was just lovely! I think I like the Hi-Sea better with its touch of fruitiness. The Pistachio Prescription was super good– sweet and creamy and nutty 😋. Deep Water is an almost-dessert-but-not-quite. It sounded like a riff on a banana split, and while I feel there could have been the slightest bit more of banana, I really loved how the cherry cola foam paired with the bitterness of the drink. It did take a minute to get through the foam to the drink though, we did get cherry moustaches for our efforts 😆
For food, we had the papas bravas, the za'atar chicken nuggets, the pork belly bao, and the manchego prosciutto sandwich. If you're sharing, get the papas and the nuggets, they were delicious and easy to share! The sandwich was also good, has four slices and a delicious jam to spread on it. The bao was tasty, but it is just one bao. I didn't look at peoples photos beforehand, and I thought there would be maybe two or that it would be big enough to cut in half and share– but it is only one bao (about the size of half a tennis ball).
The building is beautiful, I love the nautical decor! At first, the music was really at odds with the atmosphere, but after maybe 15 minutes it was switched over to something more on theme. Probably that was someone's prep-music that just didn't get switched when they opened.
We got there right at five, so there were only a handful of others there. While it wasn't crowded, it did take us a second to catch the bartenders eye from our booth to order round two. But the servers were all so kind and helpful and the drinks and food came pretty soon after we ordered them.
We had a lovely time, I'd like to...
