This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had in my life. This place is marketed as a "high end" steakhouse. From the very beginning, there were a lot of red flags that showed the opposite actually. The following were a list of things that happened that normally would never happen in a "high end" steakhouse restaurant. 1) When we first were seated, I'm not even quite sure they were prepared for us even though we had a reservation. They tried squeezing 12 people for a space that was probably comfortably for 8. Luckily a third of a way into the dinner, the table next to us finished and they combined the tables to give us more space. 2) From the beginning, they took the drink orders of half the table and forgot about the other half of the table. 3) Half the table only had knives and no forks at all. 4) We ordered champagne and the champagne that was left, they didn't put it under any ice at all. 5) There was a lot of confusion over the "bachelor party" package of what was or was not included in the package. 6) The prefixed menu only had 2 courses and were very minimal. 4 items total on the menu 7) One of the menu choices was the "Soup Du Jour," but our server had no idea what the "Soup Du Jour" was that day. 8) A lot of food items were warm or cold. 9) They completely forgot to bring my "starter" even though everyone else got theirs. They just simply shrugged it off and said sorry. 10) They didn't know who exactly ordered what item. After all these things, I was hoping the steak would be good to make it up. I was wrong. I ordered my steak medium and it was almost cooked well done, barely ANY pink at all. The minute I cut into it, I knew it was way overcooked. From what was cooked, it was SO extremely salty and I know why. There was a noticeable heavy layer of charring that also charred onto the the plate itself. It's from the built up salt from the other steaks that the steakhouse cooked and failed to clean the grill between steaks. My steak was also lukewarm at best. Our WHOLE table of 12 people could NOT finish their steak. That was really telling. I forced myself to finish it just to do it. The mashed potato that came with it was clearly powdered and not from fresh potatoes. Then some others at our table said the steak was not cooked to the right temperature and the manager tried to explain to them that it was cooked right, even though it was obviously cooked to the wrong temperature. The only way some of my friends were able to eat their steak was when they asked to redo it and got it as rare. Their "rare" was more edible to them. That was another major red flag. The main reason why I felt the need to leave a long review was that after it was all said and done, we ended up paying as a group money that we would expect to spend at a high end steakhouse! To anyone that is thinking about coming to this restaurant to get a high end steakhouse experience for a group of friends or a bachelor/bachelorette party, I would stay away. This is not the place. Being from Houston, we have lots of different steakhouses. I wouldn't even rate this to the level of Texas Roadhouse. Texas Roadhouse is a fraction of the price and taste and cooked MUCH better. Honestly I read the good reviews and really surprised. A steakhouse of this quality could never survive in a city like Houston where even our chain restaurants are much better. The only thing I will say as a positive is our waitress Mya was trying her best with what she had. I don't think this was an issue with her. I think this was an issue of a poorly run restaurant that has poorly trained their staff. Don't make the mistake of coming here expecting to get a high end...
Read moreI'm writing a review on behalf of the poor service, or lack thereof, received by our son. I spoke to both my son and the manager prior to writing this review. The first thing I asked my son was what he was wearing; he was dressed appropriately, in a black shirt and gray slacks with clean white sneakers. He went to this establishment and was speaking to the hostess, who he expressed seemed mutually interested in the conversation- enough so that she told him her full name, Brooke (I'm not adding her last name), and she asked for his Instagram to keep in contact. So essentially, it sounds like two young people flirting. He then went to the ATM to pull out cash to tip at the establishment. We checked his account and yes, he did withdraw cash. He returned and was seated in the restaurant. He ordered a lobster ravioli dish. He had a female server but then was approached by the manager, David, who felt the need to tell my son that water was $8.50. My son said okay, that's fine. David then proceeded to tell my son that they would not be serving him and then asked him to leave. So he left. He informed his father and I of the events and we were very concerned as to why he'd be refused service. We spoke to David, who talked in circles, changed his story, then started speaking to us in a condescending manner. The manager's tone was a clear indication that he was lying. David stated that our son left the restaurant, walked down the street, then returned (when he went to ATM) and that was a red flag. We proceeded to ask how so and he could not provide a clear answer. Then it went from him walking being a reg flag to him "harrassing" the hostess. We asked how he harassed her and he said that she was uncomfortable because he sat by her. I find it strange that she was so uncomfortable that she gave her personal information and initiated an exchange of information. Once I said that, then all of a sudden David alleges our son told one staff member that another staff member was an a$$hole; there was no interaction with anyone other than the hostess and server prior to David kicking him out. The server had no issue taking his order, so I believe my son when he denies ever saying that. The manager got an attitude with us while we were trying to understand their side (because we won't blindly just make accusations), and by the conversation, it's clear he's rude and unprofessional. Him coming out to tell our son the prices and then say he wouldn't serve him is plain discriminatory. David made an ASSumption that a young black male couldn't afford to eat at the wanna be high class establishment. He made a judgment based on appearance, and let me tell you it was wrong. Our son has a job making 6 figures, so he can afford to eat lobster, wagyu, and whatever the hell else he wants. Furthermore his father and I each make well over 6 figures so he is used to fine dining. I would NOT recommend this establishment. David, take this as a lesson to not judge a book by a cover. Also, don't lie- you're not good at it. Be professional,...
Read moreSan Diego has a treasure trove of excellent restaurants to visit, but I wanted to make sure to pick an excellent one for my recent anniversary. A close friend told me about the Greystone and I was a bit hesitant as I have walked by it hundreds of times while in Gaslamp. I just figured it would be an average steak place catering to tourists. Lastnight I decided to venture into this establishment to see if my friend's advice rang true over the quality and service of dinner. We were greeted at the door and ushered to a wonderfully romantic table outdoors with a perfect view of downtown Gaslamp. Knowing it was our anniversary the restaraunt surprised us by sprinkling rose pedals on the table and provided us with glasses of champagne. As we settled in we started with a few delicious dirty martinis (w/ blue cheese stuffed olives) and a terrific snow crab cocktail. The waiter, who certainly added to the atmosphere with his strong Italian accent, offered up warm bread with an incredible sweet cream rosemary butter. As we enjoyed the people watching, we were then delivered the Greystone Salad and the Roasted Beet Salad. Each bite was a reward of the locally sourced fresh vegetables mixed with tasty cheeses and other delectable morsels. Onward to the next dish, we devoured a plate of Wild Boar Sausage with a medley of onions, sun-dried tomatoes and peppers. I kid you not, it literally melted in your mouth and I was soon using the bread to sop up the flavors. The main course was next to be ushered out and was comprised of the Australian Wagyu and Pancetta Macaroni-Cheese. I have never had Wagyu but have heard the many promising reviews. The lovely restaraunt manager Sara even provided an extra layer of education when she humored me with the Wagyu Certificate of Authenticity. Setting into this steak accompanied by a wonderful Italian wine is now permanently etched in my memory. The meat was perfectly cooked and beyond any cut I have had the opportunity to enjoy. They had a Wagyu from Japan that is now on my list of must-try's when I return. It is hard not to mention the Pancetta Macaroni-Cheese, as it lived up the reputation of the best Macaroni-Cheese in the area. After our entree, we rounded out the meal with a sweet flour-less chocolate cake. This experience has left the Greystone fresh in my mind as an excellent recommendation for anyone who would like to treat themselves for a special occasion or just have a really terrific meal. We hope they keep up the good work because we will...
