Came to Hawaiian Fresh Seafood after a friend recommended it. He often comes here to get fresh fish for homemade poke bowls and it is a great pit stop prior to going to an evening Padre game.
Unlike the other poke places, they have a simple menu and they focus on the fish with their own marinades as opposed to toppings like seaweed, edamame, etc. (Unless you get the poke nachos which comes with sauces, avaocado, sesame seeds and green onions) For your plate or your bowl, you get a certain # of scoops over rice, salad or a combo of the two. The scoop sizes are generous and if you like a good rice to fish ratio, it would be good to go for the rice or an extra scoop if your going for the poke plate.
I shared a poke plate with the bf and we got the spicy salmon, kimchi tuna and garlic salmon. The spicy salmon was my favorite of the bunch as it had a nice flavor which was a bit stronger than the garlic. The kimchi tuna didn't have the cubes the salmon had, and even though it was fresh, I would have preferred it to be in cubes similarly to the salmon, just for aesthetics.
The plate was a lot of food. I opted for half rice and half salad and as I eluded to earlier, I should have gotten another scoop of rice so that we could have had a better ratio of fish to rice, since there is A LOT. We were full but couldn't stop eating. LOL.
I'm a huge fan of dole whip, so of COURSE I had to try it here. You get a 16oz cup FULL of your flavor of choice. I got pineapple, but they also had strawberry. The flavor is really nice. It's the icy kind of dole whip, not the creamy kind like at Disneyland or if they had a creamy vanilla that you could have swirled. Definitely enough for 2 to 3 people to share, ESPECIALLY if you are having more than 1...
Read moreThe HFS up in Mira Mesa has been hands-down my favorite poke place in San Diego, so glad they opened up a second location closer to me and with longer hours!!!!!
You can opt for 1, 2 or 3 scoops with rice or salad. The shoyu ahi is my favorite and I get it every time, along with a type of salmon depending on the day.
Menu is slightly different compared to the original location with obvious reasons. They don't sell fresh fish by the pound, sashimi / mac salad, hot food like musubi. But they do have mochi icecream and dole whip! Friendly staff, clean location, and plenty of outdoor seating!
Edit: Their hours have shifted and now close at 6pm instead of 7pm. 😔 Please bring the later close time back so we can come for dinner! Please...
Read moreThe poke here is insane. "Dan" with the one star review doesn't know what he's eating to claim the fish is slimy. Then again, most of the people complaining about this place and they don't understand what authentic poke is so they can go get their poke salad bowls from Venice beach instead.
Service was top notch. Great staff and quick help.
I ordered a plate with shoyu tuna, garlic salmon, and the Kilauea salmon for about $20 and they LOAD up the plate with poke.
The Kilauea salmon has a good kick!
The garlic salmon is so garlicky good and delicious, you can't get salmon better than this.
And that shoyu tuna? oh baby. HFS knows what they're doing and they kill the...
