No better place for two vegans and a vegetarian who wanted Mexican food! We had a reservation, but really did not need one on a Saturday night. We were seated promptly and the chips and salsa were put in front of us. The chips were homemade I believe and the salsa was spicy. We ordered a larger bowl of guacamole to go with that as well. The atmosphere is nice, colorful and decorated the only thing missing is a piñata. The service was wonderful from the owner I believe. She talked to us for a while about some of the ingredients in the food. The menu has about 1/2 devoted to vegan and vegetarian items. Many proteins are supplied in vegan form for the dishes. Many different forms of beef can be obtained in vegan versions. That is a really nice thing when you’re eating Mexican food. It is much appreciated. A variety of the Mexican dishes are made with vegetables, including eggplant, mushrooms, and many other things. Vegan cheese is available as well. The three of us had different entrées. One, who was not that hungry had Spanish rice, black beans, and pico de gallo. Said it was all wonderful. Second person had a quesadilla with soy chorizo and vegan cheese. Also delicious. Third entrée was an enchilada trio, vegetarian with one cheese, enchilada, one tofu, enchilada, and one bean enchilada. One of them had a wonderful authentic molé sauce with cocoa, roasted peppers And not sure what else, but it was terrific. A cold Modelo Negro on top rounded out the dinner. There are many desserts, including both vegan and non-vegan forms of rice pudding. Would definitely come again prices are very reasonable.

Hugo's Cocina , the family-owned Mexican restaurant located in the heart of Ocean Beach, San Diego, is a great place for tasty Mexican food, whether in a small group or large. The owner, Georgina, and her staff, are outstanding. The menu at Hugo's Cocina features a variety of traditional Mexican dishes, as well as SEVERAL vegan and vegetarian options. The food is made fresh to order, and the portions are generous. The prices are also very reasonable. We had a reunion of nearly 50 of our college friends at this place a couple of weeks back. Georgina worked with us on the menu, catering to every group needs, on the seating, the decor and other arrangements. She was proactive in suggesting options that would make the experience unique. Georgina and her staff were friendly and attentive despite the large group. We would definitely recommend Hugo's Cocina to anyone looking for a great Mexican meal in Ocean Beach. Here are some of the highlights of our meal: The chips and salsa were fresh and flavorful. The guacamole was creamy and delicious. The enchiladas were made with fresh, flavorful ingredients. The margaritas were strong and refreshing. The service was friendly and attentive. We would definitely recommend Hugo's Cocina to anyone looking for a great Mexican meal in Ocean Beach.

I love hugo and the roll tacos here, go and you will love it. Be advised that today 10/29/2017 i found out the orange mexican rice, the corn rolled tacos , the home made chips ALL may not be gluten free as there is only one oil vat being used at HUGOS. I have celiac and so does my daughter and Hugo let me know that if the chips are made in the AM with 'fresh' oil they are fine, otherwise beware as i have gotten sick from flour in my supposed gluten free chips before. The tacos are so good, but apparantly i can only have them when the oil is fresh and not been used prior for flour based items. This is hit or miss there and Hugo tries to be honest about the issue. My thoughts are that this particular resturant should go the distance and get 2 vats, one for chips and other corn based gluten free products and one vat for everything else. Otherwise figure something else out to resolve this. Hugos is a healthy mexican resturant, but gluten free chips are a MUST when making fresh chips. My stomach is bothering me tonight as well as my daughters. I love this resturant, and have been going here for 20 years, but there are way too many persons who want gluten free food without having to worry. Otherwise if you dont have gluten issues, enjoy!! Hugo is a great guy, and his food...
