I recently had the pleasure of visiting Sara's Mexican Food in Mission Beach, San Diego, and I am still on cloud nine from the mouthwatering experience I had there. This hidden gem deserves all the praise and recognition it can get, especially for their remarkable Carne Asada and the exceptional service provided by an extraordinary Mexican fellow named Axel.
Let's start with the star of the show: the Carne Asada. It's nothing short of perfection. Each bite was a symphony of flavors, with tender, succulent beef marinated to absolute perfection. The meat was cooked to just the right level of smokiness, and the seasoning was a delicate balance of spices that danced on my taste buds. Now, let me tell you about Axel. From the moment I walked up to the window, I was greeted with the warmest smile and genuine enthusiasm. Axel's passion for his craft is infectious, and it's evident in the way he and his team meticulously prepare each meal. The menu features an array of traditional Mexican dishes, including flavorful tacos, tantalizing burritos, and zesty salsas. Each item is crafted with care, using fresh ingredients that elevate the flavors to new heights.

During my California taco adventure, I stumbled upon a small hole-in-the-wall taco joint that delivered an unforgettable dining experience. Hereâs a closer look:
The Food (5/5) The food here is nothing short of spectacular. I ordered the Al Pastor tacos, prepared Mexican-style, and they were a revelation. Each bite burst with flavorâthe perfectly marinated pork was tender, juicy, and complemented by fresh toppings that elevated the entire dish.
I also tried their queso birria and consommĂ©, which were easily among the best Iâve ever had. The birria was rich and savory, with just the right balance of spices, and dipping the tacos into the consommĂ© was pure bliss. The depth of flavor in the consommĂ© was remarkable, making it a must-order for anyone visiting.
The Service (5/5) The service was top-notch, despite the restaurantâs humble appearance. The staff was friendly, attentive, and clearly passionate about the food they were serving. They made sure our dining experience was seamless and enjoyable, going above and beyond to make us feel welcome.
The Atmosphere (4/5) As a small hole-in-the-wall spot, this place keeps things simple with only outdoor seating. While the outdoor vibe was charming and casual, it might not be for everyone, especially if youâre looking for a more polished or cozy indoor setting. That said, the focus here is clearly on the food, and it more than makes up for the lack of ambiance.
Additional Perks This spot also offers a Taco Tuesday deal, with tacos priced at just $2.49 each. Considering the outstanding quality, this is an unbeatable deal that will keep you coming back for more.
Final Verdict This unassuming taco joint proves that great food doesnât need frills. From the bold flavors of the Al Pastor tacos to the incredible queso birria and consommĂ©, every dish was prepared with care and authenticity. While the atmosphere was simple, the exceptional food and service made it a standout experience.
Final Rating: Food: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Atmosphere: 4/5 Overall: 4.7/5

Read moreI was in the area and ordered 2 burritos (1 Al pastor and 1 carne asada with rice) and a side of chips. When I picked it up, I noticed the payment screen didnât show the carne asada with rice so I confirmed verbally if there was rice and he didnât understand me. Drove 15 min home and noticed both burritos are carne asada, neither have rice. The carne asada was super burnt too and the proportion of meat to tortilla is way off (too much tortilla). How did the al pastor burrito have carne asada inside when the wrapper is literally labeled âpastorâ?? I tried calling them for a refund bc they had a tablet payment service and they said I need to drive back which Iâm not going to do (Mission Bay traffic is always terrible). This place is so disorganized you can find better places...
