The conference may be officially over, but APEC-related closures are still having a big impact on small businesses both inside and outside the high-security zone. Security checkpoints, fences and concrete barriers were still driving away customers at Novela, a bar and lounge on Mission Street. Partner Arash Ghanadan said the venue would normally be packed on a Friday night. He also owns two other lounges, Madarae in SoMa and Barbarossa in North Beach. In total, he estimates $250,000 in losses. “I think knowing what I know today, if I knew this maybe 10 days ago, I would have probably shut down all the businesses,” he said. In fact, he said on Monday night, Novela only had about a dozen customers, and they closed early. Several large groups canceled their buyouts during the week. Ghanadan also dramatically reduced his staffing. The city touted big business for APEC and 20,000 visitors. “If you’re a small business in San Francisco I don’t think you’ll see the benefit of APEC. If you’re a large hotel, if you’re a rental company where they rented a lot of the fences and stuff, I think you will see the benefit, obviously,” he said. “We tried to reach out to the city, to the mayor’s office to let them know that not all businesses are seeing the impact that you just mentioned.” Ghanadan said he hasn’t heard back from the mayor. “I had the city’s small business office executive reaching out to me, kind of hearing my concerns and agreeing that this is the situation but no further action,” he said. Addressing the impact of APEC on businesses, Mayor London Breed acknowledged earlier this week the difficulties faced by local establishments during this time of increased security. In Fisherman’s Wharf, Abacá Restaurant never saw crowds of people at the contemporary Filipino-Californian restaurant. Chef and owner Francis Ang said he also saw a storm of cancellations, which forced him to close to the public for two days and cancel a ticketed collaboration dinner with another chef on Wednesday. #sanfrancisco #sf #smallbusiness #smallbusinessowner #bayarea #california #apec #asian #china #sfrestaurants #bar #bars #nightlife #hospitality #sfeats #news

I'm not sure if they serve food so I didn't rate there.

This is my go-to spot as bars go in SoMA that's convenient for people to get to, lots of parking garages and street parking (if you come after 6pm) and they usually will have a live DJ onsite vs serving tunes from a playlist. I would say the DJs typically play old school hip hop and pop, and sometimes I've heard reggaeton.

The venue is designed really classy like a cool color-coded-library that you want to hang in.

Drinks are on the pricey side but you are paying for the vibes. They also have two really nice zero-proof drinks (mocktails) to choose from. I like the raspberry spritzer option.

When I visit I often request to sit at one of the booths since it's so comfy and fits a big party. On the weekdays it's a pretty chill vibe and doesn't get packed so you can always find seating.

During the weekends, it probably gets packed and you can probably get one of the high cocktail tables to hang at.

Either way, I recommend checking this place out if you're visiting the downtown Market St area for its decor, safety, good drinks, old school DJs and...

I loved the vibes of this bar! As a volume sensitive person it can be a challenge to find the perfect spot where a bar feels “alive” but you can also actually hear the person you are talking to well.

Unfortunately the drinks were utter dogs. I had the vodka peach punch first since I hear that’s what they were known for and the menu description included cardamom and I love cardamom anything. Well it was flat, bland and like a less sweet melted pop. No hint of cardamom. A glass of disappointment and also did not pack a punch.

We then switched tracks to a hazy IPA, usually a safe choice that I do enjoy always when visiting the states. But something was wrong with this one. It was sour and had a undertone that seemed off. Hazy IPAs should not be like that. I was on the verge of complaining but was too timid.

My friend wanted to treat and to pay by her phone but their point of sale tablet was uncharged. They tried to charge it for like 20 minutes without success. This was utterly unacceptable to me. In the end luckily I had cash on me but what would have happened if I didn’t? Would we have to...

Love the ambiance and drinks here! Cute decor and vibes. They have different areas of the bar, great for large groups and intimate enough for a date. My favorite seating is in the back, which if you want guaranteed seating, I would recommend making a reservation.

They are known for their punch, and offer a flight. The best thing about their punches, they offer every kind of alcohol. Vodka, Bourbon, Tequila, Rum, and Gin. I hear it's good but I usually stick to the craft cocktails. They have seasonal cocktails, which is nice because I come here a few times a year, and the menu is different.

If you're a gin drinker, try the LEOPOLD BLOOM: Hibiscus Gin, Pineapple, Mint, Grapefruit. It's not only beautiful but tasty. For the Vodka drinkers, The MISS MONEYPENNY: Mulled Vodka, Drambuie, Pear Honey, Lemon is great. It taste like the perfect Hotty Toddy, but on ice. Cocktails are between $11-13. They also have some bar bites that look pretty tasty, but I have...
