Read moreInterested in tiki since childhood visits to Disney's Polynesian Resort Village in the 80's, but picked up the Smuggler's Cove book a year and a half ago. I found myself here on business and someone reminded me of the availability of tiki bars in the vicinity. On Wednesday night we went to the Tonga, which seemed like it had potential, but the drinks were actually terrible (I have no skin in the game, they were really that bad, my coworker returned his, and my homemade zombie rings circles around theirs. Who wants to listen to your typical wedding dance music when you're supposed to be in San escapism mindset? Also, they will literally push you out the door 1 minute past closing time.)
As soon as I realized Smuggler's Cove was an 8 minute Lyft ride from my hotel, I pressed my team to go. We did, and everyone was thoroughly -thoroughly- pleased with their drinks. What was supposed to be one round became two, and frankly, if I didn't have an early flight the next morning, I would have stayed until they chased me out of there, too. My buddy actually ran into his frat brother upstairs, who is close to getting his name on the rum wall. I finally got my Smuggler's Cove mug, checked off a couple to-dos, life is feeling more complete. I would go eat or of my way to visit again and hope I don't have the opportunity. *More to come to this review later, in going to bed because I have to wake up for a flight to...

If you do, you need to come to Smuggler's Cove. Even if you don't, you need to come to Smuggler's Cove. Pay close attention when you get to the address; Smuggler's Cove is hidden behind an almost-unmarked black door, and I've walked past it plenty of times even when I was sober.
Stepping into Smuggler's Cove is like stepping into Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland, only they have alcohol. Delicious, amazing, one-of-a-kind drinks you'll never find anywhere else, filled with top-notch and unique spirits you'll be hard pressed to find even on Amazon. The bartenders put a ton of detail and attention into each drink; as a result, getting your order can take a while and they're a bit more expensive than a "normal" bar. Rest assured, the time and money are well spent.
There can also be quite a line outside. It's a small place and they're very diligent about the capacity, which keeps the place crowded but functional. It's worth standing in line for, and once you're inside you'll be very thankful for the strict limits. Because the place is small, I do not recommend bringing more than 4-5 people. You probably won't be able to get a table or an area to yourself.
Order a Jamaican Milk Punch and then tell me it's not one of the most amazing drinks you've ever had....
