Local review by a local: Excellent locally made ice-cream that has great creative flavors. They are doing a great job of being COVID-19 safe, and you order via a window in the door. The only downsides are samples are not available so you could be stuck with something too sweet for example. Since I am older, I tend to go with robust flavors with things like pie crust in them. While I thought the Boysenberry was totally amazing in flavor and reminded me of the long defunct Ben & Jerry's version for decades ago, I could do without pie pieces. In keeping with simplicity, I also had a scoop of Vanilla Bean. It was refreshing. While they did have a single flavored Strawberry & a Complex Chocolate, I kind of missed a Coffee or a Pistachio. There was an intriguing Lemon combo, but without sampling why risk it. While I see the appeal for the Millennial crowd, us mature folk do enjoy the classics, so please make more of those. IN any case, it made an excellent dessert after a big meal at Ox & Anchor around the block. This local ice-cream was also available at the Avila Barn, where sundaes where available. I am not sure if that is possible in the future here....I guess it depends upon this new C-19 age. Regardless of the above, it is simply marvelous to see this wonderful venture surviving in downtown SLO, despite the many challenges. Thank you so much for all...
Read moreSo you know when people all tell you an ice cream place is amazing, and you get excited when you go, then as you're getting your first samples you worry if it's all hype? You've had some pretty amazing ice cream before. That first taste had better be pretty spectacular, right? So even if it's some of the best ice cream you've ever had, it's not going to blow you away, and if it's in any way mediocre, you'll be flat out disappointed. That's the headspace I was in as I was handed my first taste of McConnell's ice cream on a metal spoon. I took a bite and I suddenly had my perspective on the entire concept of ice cream shifted, because it is some of the best ice cream in some of the most insightful flavors you'll ever see. Every flavor is delicious, good luck picking one.
You want to know what kind of wizards these guys are? They made cornbread into an ice cream. And it's genuinely the best ice cream my wife and I have ever had. It's so good we're getting extra to go.
My only constructive criticism is that the waffle cone is not great. It tastes just like a regular cone. But with ice cream this good you won't care. They could charge 150% as much and it would still...
Read moreLet me start off by saying that I live in upstate New York. While listening to a certain famous singers biography on Audible, I discovered she was a huge fan of coffee ice cream as I have been my entire life. When I heard she had a favorite that she quite often had shipped to herself. I thought well I need to check this out. My first shipment…because it certainly won’t be my last, shipment of assorted coffee ice creams arrived this week. They are all wonderful. I bought the coffee, Brazilian coffee and the coffee with See’s molasses chips. My favorite was the coffee with the molasses chips followed by the Brazilian coffee. While I like just the plain coffee it was a little less creamy than the other two. But they all are stand out coffee ice cream! I grew up with Howard Johnson’s coffee, ice cream, which was always my gold standard. No grocery shop ice cream comes close and any hometown manufacturers just don’t get enough coffee to make it worth the calories. Trader Joe’s has a pretty good coffee ice cream. But when I want a special treat, I will be ordering and having McConnell’s shipped all the way across...
