Salt Lake City | Year-End Foodie Recap: Places to Avoid 👉🏻 Don't Go Edition

This sure catered to my creativity as one who loves options and flavors. We came up with some good combos and very much enjoyed our plates! Such a great value ($15 all you can eat dinner), large variety of drinks from freestyle menu, nice appetizers and desserts options we got both Rangoon options, krab, which were perfect with cream cheese and green onions, slightly sweer and a good mix of crunchy and soft wonton wrapper; and cheesecake, which were good too. The wonton on the cheesecake is more substantial than the cheesecake filling, but once you get to it, it's tasty cheesecake; comes with two of 6 topping choices: caramel, cherry, white chocolate, etc.). All buffet items are fresh and inviting and sauces are great! Also some toppings like peanuts, shredded coconut, sesame seeds, red pepper/chili flakes, etc. Server brings bowls of brown/white rice to the table. They've got little recipe cards for inspiration. Grab a bowl, stack it high (it cooks down considerably, of course, but every plate is a great portion), sauce it, and watch it steam and grill on their round griddle surface, their chefs doing a little griddle dance... 😊 Very nice server for our visit, great at refills and being available. We went at about 4 pm because we have odd schedules, and that was great since it wasn't crowded. Tables and booths, wait to be seated, open lighted floor, some party rooms separate, clean restrooms, great ambiance. Super pleased that I could get sooo many veggies!

I was really excited to come to Hu Hot, but was quickly disappointed. First off, there was a bottle of foam hand soap on the host desk in the front, as if it was sanitizer. Why? Doesn't make any sense... The restaurant looked cool enough, and service was good, but the buffet and kitchen areas were very messy and gross. There was food scattered around the buffet tables, and mixed with other ingredients. There was partially cooked food on the floor of the grill area, and the grill itself was very minimally cleaned. Food was still plastered to the grilltop as new plates were dumped on to cook. They squirted water on the cook spots and scraped it into a hole in the middle of the grill, sometimes splattering old food residue onto other people's cooking food. Meals were slightly mixed together as they were so close together. I received my food half overcooked and undercooked. I got a half raw shrimp that was inedible, raw zucchini along with partially cooked zucchini, and some noodles that were tough and overcooked. The sauces were pretty good, the teriyaki was my favorite. But that was probably the best part of the food, which is sad. I don't really care to come back to Hu Hot, but may try a different location some time. The employees were all very nice and the service was pretty good. Definitely not worth the $40 we spent though...

Visited HuHot recently for the first time for take out. From the start, the blonde hostess that "greeted" us seemed unfriendly and borderline pretentious. I couldn't help but wonder if it was because I work at an engineering firm and just happened to come off a job site, dressed in my field clothes, and wasn't wearing the slacks and button up shirt that I'd normally wear when working in the office.

The food was very good. You put all the ingredients you want in a big bowl; noodles, meats, veggies, and sauces. The selection of ingredients was great, and the number of sauces was even a bit ridiculous (had maybe 20-30 sauces or so to choose from). As we were filling our bowls an irritated-looking younger employee was standing there, seemingly waiting for us to move so she could swap out the floor mats. She huffed and puffed when we finally moved on to the grill.

Once you have your bowl ready, to take it over to a large grill/griddle where two cooks fry up your bowl of food. The cooks wouldn't hardly give you the time of day and when our food was ready, the food was pretty much just tossed at us and off the cooks went without saying a word. I was a bit disappointed, because when I saw the grill I expected a friendly, interactive exchange like you'd get at a hibachi style grill. The reality was unfriendly and cold.

Our visit ended with the original hostess standing, still looking awfully cross, waiting for us to put our take out in a bag and check out.

Overall, the food was great; 4-5 stars in my book, and it was a good value. But the service from start to finish was surprisingly terrible. It went well beyond just being "bad" service, and I found myself several times over the next couple days recounting the experience and asking myself "did that really happen?" I definitely won't be back here again, but I'll be looking into other Mongolian grill types of eateries in the future. Hopefully HuHot can take a moment to educate their staff about the very basics of...

I have mixed feelings about this place. My wife and I went and the food was good. Tasted fresh and was pretty flavorful. The guys at the grill were fun to watch and very entertaining. I also liked the decor and thought it was cleverly themed.

But there were a lot of downsides. Our server was terrible. She wasn't very friendly and looked like she hated work. She also didn't really do her job well. Our dishes were not cleared off the table regularly, and our drinks were not refilled. At $2.50 a drink I would have appreciated more than one refill. The rice was somehow both dry and mushy and their egg drop soup tased like it was from a box. The place was also dirty. The floors were sticky and covered in food pieces. It didn't look like it was cleaned regularly. The buffet was a mess. The splash shields were covered in sauce and the veggies/meats were not cleaned regularly. There was lots of mixing between the bins so it was difficult to get a scoop of pineapple without also getting the other veggies that were around it. The floors looked like they hadn't been tended to in several hours as well. They also served everything on very worn plastic plates. Although I am sure they were clean, they almost looked dirty because of how worn they were. I think using better quality dishes would have taken the experience up a notch.

Considering the price at $38 for two people, I don't think it was worth it. Between the sub-par service and how dirty some areas were I would reconsider coming back. I've paid the same amount going to other local restaurants and have had better service and an overall better experience.

If you have a hankering for Mongolian BBQ they had good flavors. However, overall the restaurant needs some help in order to live up to...

Our experience at HuHot this evening was horrendous! I worked in restaurants for most of my adult career and am understanding when the restaurant is battling being short staffed. There were issues tonight that I can understand it was because of that.

However, there were so many health concerns because of carelessness of the staff. One of the boys working the grill was standing in the cove where the kitchen doors are, took his hat off and ran his hands through his hair. He then put his hat back on and went back to the grill. A different employee at the grill flipped the straw on his water jug and took multiple swigs right at the grill. Neither of these employees washed their hands after.

There were way too many guests at the food counters. Most were not wearing masks and none of them were maintaining any sort of distance. The boys working the grill continuously kept yelling for everyone to move down the line and guests packed on in. There were multiple guests touching their hair and faces, while getting their food and sauces. None of the serving equipment was changed or cleaned. I also saw two different girls with very long hair that was restong on the food counter tops. None of the employees cleaned the counters after this.

I understand that the mask mandate is over and that some of these issues were guest issues. However I do believe there needs to be better training on cleanliness protocols and maintaining some sort of distancing throughout the areas where you build your meals.

Our server was great, given the circumstances. We felt bad for the team working, between how busy it was and how few employees they had. However we will not be going back to HuHot though. There were too many concerning problems...
