Crepes tasted good but were tiny. $10.50 for a small-medium sized ratatouille crepe, barely enough filling in it. it was also falling apart as I dug into it with my fork. my friends ham crepe stayed together fine when he was eating his. our total came to $61. four crepes, a fruit tarte, two waters and an Arnold palmer plus an iced tea; you do the math. we all got the savory crepes and there was not enough filling in any of them for us to leave feeling satisfied. the fruit tarte peaches also tasted like they were canned and not fresh.
the grossest part of it all: my friend was complaining his water tasted like "copper" or "metal" and that's when we noticed there was still lipstick on the rim of his cup! that explains the weird taste. then, my other friend who got the Arnold palmer said her drink tasted like "butt" and that's when we noticed the rim of her cup was also full of lipstick marks on it. mine seemed to be clean except for my lip marks and my water tasted fine. my partners cup also seemed clean.
we told the server and she took the drinks off the total as compensation and she was super apologetic about it, but it really brings into question how well they are cleaning their dishware especially in times of covid lol. the fact that whomever washes the cups didn't clean the most important part: the RIM WHERE PEOPLE PUT THEIR LIPS. like, come on.
we only 3-starred this place because the server...
Read moreHow disappointing. I don't often leave negative reviews unless I think the situation warrants writing one. We saw the sign for this little restaurant just down the block from La Fonda. As lifelong fans of French dishes, we wanted to give it a try. Since neither of us was particularly hungry, though, we opted for one slice of quiche, one crepe with raspberries and two drinks (a soda and a SMALL bottle of Perrier). The quiche was mediocre at best (almost tasteless) while the crepe was tough and chewy and the berries all alone within its folds. No creme or glaze, and only the barest hint of powdered sugar. All in all, not very tasty.
We had wondered about being given menus with NO prices, and I suppose we ought to have asked. In retrospect, it's rather arrogant to assume that all your clientele is so well off they don't care what things cost. But since we had ordered only two minor items, we decided to go with the flow. We should have known better. The check came... $36... for a small quantity of very disappointing food. Yes, we tipped, which added another 20%, because I don't believe in penalizing the server for the failings of the restaurant.
Thus, despite its central location near the Plaza, and good faith efforts at a sort of French country decor, I cannot recommend it. And if you do decide to give it a try, definitely ask for a PROPER menu......
Read moreMy elderly mother and I stopped in for cappuccinos and pastries. After waiting in line for ten minutes we purchased and paid for our selections at the register (with a regrettable 20% tip). I found it odd that our drinks were served to us in styrofoam cups, but assumed it was because they would be closing in 30 minutes and wanted to give us the option to take our drinks with us if we didn't finish them. We selected one of 6 empty tables and sat to enjoy our pastries. Within 30 seconds we were approached by a waitress telling us we could not sit in the restaurant because what we ordered was "to go food". I told her at no point did I ask for food "to go". She responds saying anything purchased and paid for at the register is considered "to go food" even though there was no visible sign posted notifying customers that you must order off of a different menu to enjoy the luxury of a chair and table in their establishment. I pointed out the absurdity of this policy to the waitress, especially given the five empty tables around us but she leaned in to her petty tyranny and insisted that we must leave. Again, no clear signage at the front indicating that pastries and coffee are not a sufficient purchase to earn a coveted spot at a table inside the cafe. I will...
