Wow. Why have I waited so long to get to Hang Ah? Lifelong dimsum seeker here. From Hong Kong to Vancouver BC to San Francisco, Alameda, Portland and Oakland. I'm delighted to put Hang Ah on my map. They are located just off the highway in what appears to have been a fast food place. Don't let the modest decor dissuade you. Hang Ah does not have carts, but food comes out in a constant stream. A few items to note that were exceptional - much better than I've had anywhere - ANYWHERE: Steam pork bao was the softest bun and the flavor was perfect. They are huge and I recommend getting extra to go. Crispy shrimp ball was so light. I often do not order these because the crispy bits are hard and can be sharp. Not so with these. The crispy bits were so delicate and delicious, I wish we had ordered more. Pea greens were very fresh and not over salted or seasoned. Lotus leaf rice was not overpowering and the rice was soft but still nice and chewy. Shumai...let's talk about the shumai. What the heck did they do to the shumai to make it so exceptionally good? I normally don't like shumai but this....THIS shumai was hands down, world class and the best shumai I've ever had. And that was pretty much how I was feeling about this dining experience. It just kept getting better and better as the real bamboo steam baskets stacked up. The chef(s) clearly takes great pride in making world class dim sum out here in sleepy little Santa Rosa. I always over-order so I can take home lots of leftovers. Considering how many meals I got out of what I ordered, an abundance of dim sum items plus drink and tip comes out to about $40pp - well worth it for some of the best dim sum around. I'll be back...
Read moreI've been coming to this restaurant since they first opened their doors. We have introduced and recommended countless people to this establishment. But that has come to an end due to their dishonest business practice.
Sat down for dinner shortly after 5:00 p.m. when they opened and there are only four tables with patrons. We placed our order and our food started to come out. At 6:15, I was informed that one of the dishes was taking a little longer and that it would be delayed. I was offered free steamed rice for the inconvenience which I obliged. At 6:35, I told them I would like to check and I no longer wanted the dish because it had been over an hour. They insisted that the dish was coming out. I told him I no longer wanted it and then they said they were simply backed up due to all the delivery orders. Meanwhile, the entire restaurant is filling up with people who are receiving their orders, eating, and leaving. We asked for the check again, and they finally bring out my last dish which was the main dish. Except the portion size was about what you receieve during a lunch special. After over an hour, everyone was done eating. They refused to take it off the bill and also charged me for the free rice. This is not the same business I chose to support from literally day one many years ago. I will take my $150 and support another business employing honest...
Read moreI wanted this place to be better and sadly it wasn't and I don't see how it can improve on its "dim sum" product if they continue to use previously frozen products or poor quality ingredients.
I should have known better when i saw that this restaurant was a converted A&W but i wanted to give it a valid chance. In doing so, I ordered my "normal" fair for any dim sum restaurant:
Dim Sum Menu: pork ribs in black bean garlic sauce roasted duck roasted/baked bbq pork buns shu mai sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves fried sesame balls shrimp stuffed mushrooms Main Menu: beef chow fun
they only truly edible products from the above list were there roast duck -- surprisingly sweet taste, sticky rice and the sesame balls. the shu mai and pork buns were previously frozen and tasted of it. they had residual water trapped in them and tasted bland. the shrimp mushrooms were poorly constructed and also bland.
the beef chow fun was "good" only in comparison to the horror show of the dim sum.
plain and simple, this should have stayed an A&W and for those in Santa Rosa, it's worth the drive to SF to the original Hang Ah as that is what Dim Sum should taste like. If you can please go to SF and witness the madness of the stainless steel carts going around as you peer into the round bins. That is how you order dim sum NOT off of...
