Despite living in the region for the last 5 years, today we decided to become first time guests at Penn Station. My partner and I ordered the 10" pizza and 12" philly steak sub sandwiches respectively, making one a combo and sharing a large fry.
However, despite having ordered different size subs, the finished sandwiches we recieved displayed no difference in size to one another.
The order taker was neither warm nor friendly; she seemed to just be going through the motions of her job. Perhaps she'd had a rough day and we came at the wrong time? Thankfully the staff member at the other end of the counter, where you pay and recieve your drink, was more pleasant and left us encouraged about our experience.
Pros: The sweet tea was smooth and offered a good ratio of sugar-to-brew strength. Our meal was delivered to our table. Our large order of fries, which were served fresh, arrived shortly after the sandwiches and had good flavor. The serving of fries was generous, similiar to Five Guys in that the cup they're served to you in arrives overflowing. Sandwiches were served open-face and cut in half, allowing you the choice of eating your meal as a sub or 4 open-faced flatbreads.
Cons: Dirty tables. Both trash cans near the exit were at full capacity, nearly overflowing by the time our meal was complete (unacceptable considering the relatively low level of customers present throughout our visit). Poor customer service by the Order Taker. No noticeable difference in finished product from...
Read moreI know inflation is a thing but this seems more like gouging. Way too high for a sandwich, fries, and a drink.
House: food prep areas looked very well kept but the front of house was a disaster. Spills and wrappers all over the condiment area and many seats/tables unbussed.
Service: ordered right away and all staff was friendly.
Food: I got a club sub. It was haphazardly assembled but was tasty nonetheless. Fries were OK but not seasoned at all. I figured at least salt would be on them, but nope. It's been a while since my last visit so maybe that's how they come and I just don't remember but very bland. I also got lemonade. Definitely skip this. It was more lemon juice than anything. Too acidic and ZERO sweetness.
Price: this was sticker shock for sure. I figured $10 to $15 bucks not $25 for a one person lunch. I'm sure the "but it's higher quality than fast food" argument could be attempted but legitimately I've had better all around from Arby's, Jersey...
Read moreFirst time eating here. Came highly recommended from a friend in Cincinnati. You won't be disappointed. Bread makes our breaks a sandwich, and their bread here MAKES this one of the best subs I've ever had. Sub was hot! Temperature is a big deal. When you ask for a toasted sub, it's because your want it served hot, not luke warm like you get at many other sub shops that toast sandwiches.
I got the philly steak sub, and the only thing that wasn't a 5 was the meat itself which was just a bit bland, but when I mentioned this to the employees, they said next time just ask for a bit more steak seasoning. They serve the sub with mustard and pizza sauce if either of those are your thing, which neither are for me, but I loved the sauted onions and mushrooms, and did I mention their bread? Worth it by itself!
The fries are also delicious. Do it. Just do it if you're in the area. You...
