An unexpected treat! I spent the weekend at Treasure Island and was searching for a breakfast spot. There were a dozen choices in either direction when I noticed that one place was Puerto Rican and locked in on that with my sights set on a cuban sandwich with cafe con leche.
It was a quick drive to AJ's on Alt. 19 via the Tom Stuart Causeway. They were just opening at 8am. Husband and wife owners Antonio and Jabnia were there with chef Hector. Very friendly and pleasant people who moved to Florida about 7 years ago after hurricane Maria. The place was neat and clean with indoor and outdoor dining. They serve sandwiches, hot food and a host of traditional favorites.
As many of you know, I am very finicky when it comes to my cuban sandwich, with the perfect balance of ingredients more desirable to me than bulkiness or creativity. They brought me a Tampa Cuban made the way I like it, satisfying my fastidious nature. High marks for that! The right bread, pickles, mustard, ham, pork and salami perfectly balanced, pressed and charred. I also got the wife an empanada and an alcapurria.
While I may never see them again since I live very far away, I was delighted to find a "perfect" cuban sandwich and to reminisce about our life and times in Puerto Rico. Come...
Read moreI found this place just by scanning imaps for restaurants in my area. Its name suggested American fare but that is not the case! We were greeted by the owner as we walked in. The menu was easy to find and read. The store itself appeared clean and well lit. It is just a breakfast and lunch type place and we got there around 11 am so everything was fresh and available but we chose breakfast foods. After looking at the menu, I couldn’t pass up on the plantains or the empanada so I ordered them as well. This food was soooo good! Fresh eggs perfectly cooked, the bacon was crispy but not overcooked. We tried the freshly made passion fruit drink which was the perfect choice for us. The plantains and empanada were exactly was I was hoping for. If I lived closer, I’d go here frequently. We also spoke with the owner a bit and you couldn’t meet a nicer guy. I highly recommend you try AJ’s. For some delicious food. When I’m in the area again, I’ll certainly come in...
Read moreA fairly recent addition to the area with exceptionally great tasting authentic Puerto Rican Island Cuisine. This little “Hidden Gem” may be small but, it’s BIG on flavor! Clean, bright & airy with very friendly staff welcome you upon entering this cute lil restaurant at 72nd & Seminole’s SW corner formerly known as Tony’s Latin Cravings. Featuring both outdoor and indoor dining, take-out, delivery, catering and even Espresso Coffee drinks make this is a fantastic breakfast, lunch or brunch spot 6 days a week except for Sunday. After reading many positive reviews we had stopped in for breakfast sandwiches & roasted potatoes and fell in love with our tastebuds yet again! Great tasting authentic island fare that they obviously pour their love into and it shows on the first bite. Clean, affordable, friendly & delicious- what’s not to love? As locals- We’ll be back for...
