I was curious about this "new" eatery in Seminole so I went there recently with a friend. The moment we walked in the door I realized this was the same Trip's Diner, just a new name. The place is somewhat dingy looking and it always has been. It could really use a makeover. I'm used to the shiny, sparkling glass enclosed dessert showcase that the New Jersey Diners are so famous for. The glass showcase at Apple Butter Cafe is not clean looking. The black shelves look dusty. Could use a bit of sprucing up. Lunch was so so. I ordered a Chef's salad. It had nice ingredients and the dressing was good. but it was a messy presentation. It looked very much like slices of turkey were hand torn and thrown into a pile. Same for the ham. Part of a hard boiled egg here, shredded cheddar there. One slice of bell pepper, two small onion ringlets. The flavor was good, lettuce was fresh and crisp. But it was sloppy. My friend had a Cold Salad Plate where she chose 3 options. That was it. No garnish, no lettuce. It was truly an ugly plate. She chose chicken salad, tuna salad and coleslaw. The chicken salad was good, the coleslaw as well. The tuna was dark. Not a high quality tuna. No respectful diner in New Jersey would ever serve tuna that wasn't of the solid white variety. It was very unappetizing. Not sure where the Apple Butter name comes in as there isn't that much of a selection that would go with Apple Butter except for toast but I love the name. I dined with family for late breakfast when this was Trip's in the past. The food was okay but the place looked weathered and dusty. It still looks the same way. I feel badly that the new owner has not made an effort to brighten things up a bit. I understand that there are mostly regulars who eat there every week and they are comfortable with the surroundings. Some people do not notice anything more than who they are with and their food. The servers there are incredible nice and kind; no complaint there. But to remain successful, there have to be efforts made to keep the new patrons coming and coming back. Lastly, the young man who seated us when we arrived, also accepted our payment upon leaving. He openly complained to us and went on and on about a customer who annoyed him because he asked too many questions. For that, we will...
Read moreFirst, I know this is NOT Tripp's dinner. The two stars is because my experience started off ok and then turned into THE WORST dining experience I’ve ever had. I have never felt so degraded, disrespected, and disregarded in any establishment EVER in my WHOLE life. It started with an order of shrimp and grits. Had lots of shrimp and grits but never the kind that was delivered to my daughter. It was a fried block of grits. Nothing's wrong if you like that kind of thing but it was not advertised a a "modified" version of the dish. Informed the waitress that she did not want it. She said she'd "see what she could do." Came back with a terribly rude manager who explained that "we can't just change our mind if we don't like something." Where? Who? She then proceeds to say "you'll have to pay a portion of it." This is AFTER the waitress took it away. So am I to pay for NO food? Ok. The waitress and manager disappear I guess to inform the staff of the issue since they ALL proceeded to peek at us since we appeared to be the topic of conversation. After a wait to get our bill, the manager sent the busboy to tell us that"the manager said she'll take it off but to inform us not to come back." Wait, what?! I then had a rational conversation with the bus boy who explained that he was just doing what he asked. I even offered to pay for the gray unappealing "cheesy hash brown casserole" that I sent back earlier. I think that's where somebody got triggered. The manager flew back over yelling "this is not Tripp's!" Obviously considering I've made several visits since the new owner. I even made it a point to tip the waitress even though she disappeared while I waited to get the mangers name which I was never given. I won't be back.
Edit: I know nothing in life is perfect. Actually the insert for the specials just says: Shrimp and Grits; We didn't see on the menu and the waitress said you served it.Again, perhaps include the fact that it's a cake with the info on the specials. Honestly I think it's the format of the menu. I had to ask where the pancakes were because it wasn't listed on the side with the breakfast items. It's on another page under:...
Read moreThis was our second time coming. Our food was all horrible and presented like slop. They comped the entire meal and I left hungry. I ordered the basics breakfast Sandwich with a side of grits. The grits were so watery that they should be considered corn soup and not grits at all. The Sandwich came to me like a pile of slop the egg yolks were busted. It was completely falling apart so they made me another Sandwich. The second one that I got was another pile of slop with half a pieceof bacon not worth $9 (see photo). What is up with the hand full of unmelted sprinkle cheese this is gross. The kids pancakes were tougher than old leather, their eggs were way over cooked, the bacon was good but they only sent one slice with kids meal. My toasts was grilled on one side not even toasted. Our order of French fries came out cold and soggy. The waitress should never have even brought my first sandwich to me. She should know not to bring food out that's looks so bad. We came to eat the weekend prior had the most beautiful meal my sister ordered the basic breakfast sandwich and it was the most beautiful sandwich I've ever seen so I went back a few days later to get it for myself and I will never return. The waitress never came to check on us. I went and got a menu maybe I'd order different food she never came to once to ask us I sat there for 15 minutes before I got another lady for help. They didn't charge us for the food and we left. This was my mother's day breakfast with the kids... I went home and made the best egg sandwich I had ever eaten in my life. It wasn't a busy day there's no reason the waitress never came to ask us how things were. You need consistency if you have one good cook and the rest are poor quality it's bad for buisness. It also ruined my...
