I wanna start this review by stating that I am a DIE-HARD Gaetano’s fan. I’ve been eating Kovac sandwiches for a decade and I’ve shared them with friends, family, and co-workers. I’ve even brought them across state lines, all the way down to Virginia to showcase my favorite sandwich in the world.
I make the trip back up to CT about 3-4 times a year and it’s a must to stop by and grab some Kovacs to go. Today was no different and I ordered 5 Kovac heroes over the phone. I was helped by a lovely woman (didn’t catch her name) and I asked if they had any seeded rolls left. I knew it was a long shot, as they’re usually the first to go, but she assured me that they had some. I also asked for all 5 sandwiches to have balsamic vinegar added to them.
I arrived about 20 minutes later and the sandwiches were ready to rock, with the bill coming to $70. I know Gaetano’s food is well worth the price and I’m certainly not complaining about the price tag.
When I paid, I was handed over the sandwiches after being helped quickly and kindly. I was out the door in a matter of moments and tore into one of the sandwiches the second I got home. This is where things took a turn and for the first time, I was disappointed by the quality and follow-up service provided.
My sandwich, after taking a first bite, I knew something was different. I looked through the sandwich and noticed a few things: 1.) No seeded rolls (on any of the sandwiches) 2.) no balsamic (on any of the sandwiches) 3.) No fresh mozzarella (replaced with dried mozzarella) 4.) The prosciutto was incredibly thick-cut (to the point where it was inedible)
Upon realizing all of the issues and inconsistencies, I called Gaetano’s to try and get some clarification. This time, I was greeted by a man (again, didn’t catch his name) and asked what happened. He informed me that they had run out of fresh mozzarella AND seeded rolls. This wasn’t told to me upon pick up, nor was I informed prior to pick up while they were making the order.
I wanna also mention that I hadn’t realized there were issues with the lack of balsamic and prosciutto (seriously, this must’ve been the tail end of the meat because it was BEYOND thick, really chewy, and practically inedible).
The phone call was brief and so was the apology. I haven’t called back to address the other issues because I’m not looking for anything, other than to draw attention to a potential issue in quality control and customer service.
The sandwich itself tasted fine, it just wasn’t up to its usual god-like standards. And yes, I finished the whole thing. Again, just mentioning that a phone call to inform me of the change in bread and ingredients would’ve been appreciated and I still probably would’ve gone through with the purchase.
This one experience certainly won’t prevent me from coming back in the future (if this is the first review you read, please don’t let this deter you! It’ll be one of the best meals you ever have!). This is more so for the regulars who may want to take a peak at their hero before walking...
Read moreNo matter where you are in the State of Connecticut...or anywhere else...you MUST put Gaetano's on your bucket list of hot food spots. This isn't just a deli...this is a food experience filled with the freshest and most incredible combinations of food around. Our sandwiches were made fresh right in front of us by a literal food Stylist. The care and passion that each of their counter people have to create the best food possible is evident as you watch them slice everything fresh and put the ingredients together. My Italian sub was unbelievable and my wife always gets the "Stratford and Main". If you love breaded chicken...just order this sandwich. They are always friendly and always a little busy. BUT, the line goes quick and it's well worth the few extra minutes to get the freshest...
Read moreI am a longtime loyal customer of Gaetanos since they were at their old location in Stratford. Probably 10 to15 years now. Now I mostly go to the Shelton location as I live local to it. But recently I stopped in to their new location in Stratford and discovered they were closing. Everything was put away and they were locking up. The older gentleman working looked at my 8 months pregnant belly and beckoned to me. He said no problem.. for you, okay. I said you wouldn't deny a pregnant lady food? And he winked and said "Never". Charming manners and delicious fresh ingredients. The best sandwich you'll ever have I promise you. I had the Kovacs Special. My favorite. The best deli in...
