Stumbled on this place looking for lunch on my honeymoon this last weekend. And I can honestly say given the other food options that had been rather bad experiences up until this point this was a breath of fresh air. The staff were super sweet and very attentive and the atmosphere of the bar and restaurant was cute and comfortable. Their menu is a pretty standard Fusion or a Tex-Mex style Mexican restaurant and the quality of food is great. The only reason I didn't give five stars is a little on the pricier side but it is in the middle of heavenly which can be expected in a tourist area. And most restaurants down where we live that are this style usually come with bottomless chips and salsa however this place does not it is an appetizer option on the menu. I did see a few other reviews saying that they thought the food was on the Bland side however this was far from our experience. The kitchen was on point this day. Especially if you were getting the tacos you have to get the curry chicken taco most places taste like they just smother the chicken and Curry powder and the flavor is not there however with Azul complete opposite it tasted like grade a curry chicken from a Thai restaurant in a taco combined with the most flavorful and sweet fruit salsa on top. The tacos are also very Hefty and I did the trio definitely didn't finish them as a solid amount of food for the price point and for a good lunch. The cocktail menu is also fantastic I had a bloody mary on special and it was one of the best ones I had all weekend and definitely strong. There was a few other drinks that sounded amazing on their hot menu that didn't get a chance to order but will definitely be ordering next time we go back. My husband ordered a standard burrito and the size was enormous he was unable to finish it but in the best way possible. If you are looking for an affordable comfortable place to have lunch when you're at Heavenly I would definitely give this...

Could definitely have been a better experience. The food was ok. The environment was ok. The service wasn't the best. Two different ladies helped us because the one got busy for a bit. Our actual server was fairly pleasant at least but neither of the ladies were able to give a suggestion to save their lives. I don't usually rant but here goes: Two things that are really frustrating to hear from a server. "Oh I don't know I don't actually eat here." Or "Oh everything is great here." At least with the I don't actually eat here comment it could potentially be answered with "but this dish is really popular and we sell a lot of it." Which is at least somewhat helpful. Having no opinion at all about which dishes are better than others or any knowledge of which dishes sell the most tells me that everything is at best just ok. That seems to be the case at this restaurant based on the food we tried. Even that might not have ruined the experience if it weren't for the one lady basically trying to argue with me about how I should know what I want based on what the menu says. When I ask for opinions like " how is this burrito?" I don't want a response like "yep that is a burrito. Do you like burritos?" To be perfectly honest I have had great experiences at restaurants where a server very confidently suggested a meal and when I got the meal it turned out just ok or even sometimes the meal turned out to be just not my taste at all. I still appreciate the server's attempt to ease my decision making process and I also don't regret trying the thing that he or she really likes or is the most popular. I definitely don't want a server to make me feel condescended to because I can't read a menu and intuitively figure out what the best things on there are based on the font, or a roll...

While it isn't explicit on their menu, many things here can be made vegan and/or gluten-free, much to my delight (as I love Mexican/Latin food). Our server also was happy to recommend items on the menu that could be modified to be vegan and gluten-free. I ended up going with the two-taco-and-a-side combo, and had the sweet potato taco, the veggie chili taco, and the cinnamon cranberry quinoa. Our server assured me that my tacos would have the cheese and sour cream omitted, and served on corn tortillas instead of wheat flour tortillas. And they were, and they were delicious! The veggie chili one was nice and hearty ... I would maybe next time have a bowl of chili by itself! And the quinoa was both slightly sweet, slightly acidic, and slightly savory - a nice balance of flavors. I would have loved to have had the tortilla chips and salsa, but our server said that their chips are fried in the same fryer as their gluten-filled fried foods, so there would be some cross contamination. So, I opted to skip them. The rest of our party (all omnivores) enjoyed their food as well. It was a warm summer day, so we sat outside, which was nice and relaxing. Prices were a little bit more than what I would normally pay for Mexican food, but Azul is located in the Heavenly Village shopping area and right on Lake Tahoe Blvd., so that might be a factor in the pricing.
